95 corolla 7afe wont rev past 5k issues

New here Just got back into a 95 corolla with 150k miles 5 speed and in perfect shape. All records and 2nd owner. Figured since it was owned by an old guy that it needed a quick run threw the gears to clear the crud . My old corolla would rev all the way to 6k and this doesn't . It will but once it hits 5k it starts running like poop and and I think miss-fires since it tripped the engine light on and then it went off. I drove it yesterday and it didn't do it. Went to red line just fine and now again today it did it. I know i dont need to always bring her up that hi but I would at least want to know why its doing it. Would a tune up need to be done soon? Clogged fuel filter? Any help would be great, just so glad im back in a Toyota.... Ive had BMW's, Mercedes, vw's and Mazda, nothing comes close to the reliability of Toyota!

Check your basic tune up components.

1. Check your spark plugs. If they are fouled then replace them.
2. Check your spark plug wires. If those are fouled, get the duralast ones from autozone because they have a lifetie warranty. I replace mine once a year.
3. Check distributor cap and rotor.

If any of these parts are worn, they will cause a misfire. If all these parts check out well, move onto the fuel filter. Hell check your air filter too.
