My power steering is very rough and sort of 'choppy' on cold start and isn't perfect at operating temperature. Belts are starting to squeak a little as well, any idea what the problem may be?
im having same prob in my 97 chek your power steering pump make sure there is power steering in it. If you are putting in ps too often you most likely have a leak like i do from the pump but it could also be your steering rack.
Get some Lucas powersteering stop leak, works perfect.
And it reconditions the pump.
I ran a pump with NO fluid for nearly a month, and put some regular fluid with the lucas stop leak and it worked fine with no noise or leaks.

doing full turns (left/right) lights up the battery, and that squeaky sound when turning is audible now.... did the turkey baster method to replace the PS fluid once, no dice...

Are you facepalming my pump with no fluid?
I was in a fender bender and lost my power steering fluid, didn't have money to get more so I ran it for a month til I got paid again, filled it up and it ran fine xD
It was my old junker that I beat on.

I should have been more clear; I was responding to both points. Lucas "fixit" products cost a lot and generally don't do anything beneficial IMO. That, and of course the power steering is going to work better with fluid in it compared to being dry.

I, too, thought it was curious that these lightweight little cars with small tires have power steering when my truck does not. One-handed palm steering in parking lots(or car parks ) is nice and all, I just wonder why Toyota though it necessary for an economy car and not for a truck.

It sounds like your water pump, crankshaft, alternator belt is not tight enough.
PS pump is driven by the water pump, which in turn is driven by the crankshaft. Turning the wheel lock-to-lock puts load on the PS pump, making it harder to turn. This makes the water pump harder to turn as well since the two pumps are connected together by the belt. Then the belt driving the water pump will slip, that is your squeaking sound. And since it slips, it does not drive the alternator properly either and there is your battery light turning on.

'98 corolla -PS fluid runs dry, dye test showed leakage near PS pump and rack n pinion. RnP changed 6 months ago, still under warranty and will be replaced free of charge but do I have to replace the pump as well? how do I know for sure the pump is bad too?

will the stop leak fluid help in this case?
1. Leak may be the high pressure hose, they seem to go bad quite often.
2. Is the pump noisy, groaning,etc.? If not, it's probably still good.
3. suck out some fluid with a turky baster or similar, put it in a glass jar and hold it up to the light. See any tiny silvery floaties in there? If yes, that's part of your pump. Replace pump and get your PS system flushed, or you'll do it all over again before long.

one stupid question - you did mean to suck out the PS fluid, didn't you? but if the PS pump has gone bad, why would its parts appear in its fluid source?
