Metal water pump gasket question

Can RTV be used on the metal gasket? I put a few knicks in the back housing when removing it. I did my best to clean it up with some 1500 grit but they are still there. Will the metal gasket seal up some tiny knicks or should RTV it or get a paper gasket and RTV that.

i was at the dealership today and i asked the parts guy pretty much this same question. he brought a tech over and we spoke. basically from what i took of the conversation if u use the metal gasket to seal the pump halves together then u dont need the RTV. but any other kind of gasket u will need RTV. in your case u may want to use RTV on the nicked metal areas to try to fill the areas that u scratched up. i had my pump done 3 years ago and there is RTV on my gasket but i couldnt tell u if the gasket is metal or not cuz i dont remember. if u go to your local dealer and ask the parts guy this and then buy the gasket from them they will tell u if u need the RTV or not. just remember that they're much more likely to answer your questions if u give them business and buy something from them

I bought a Gates water pump that was complete with both halfs. It was only about $10 more than just the front with the impeller. You should probably change the short hose that is behind the back half too. Saves the hassle of the metal gasket.

Can you give me a part number? All of the ones I've seen have only been a half. The store where you got it from would be helpful also. I managed to get most of the nicks out with some scotch-brite and 1500 but now the dealer tells me they don't have the gasket in stock. Did the gates come with a metal gasket or did you check?

Gates 42587

Nice pump with metal impeller. Just google it, the typical online stores will have them. The pump comes assembled, so the gasket is already there. It also includes the O-ring.

If you want the 3" hose, PM me.
