My Corolla (94 5spd)has been having a misfire problem when cruising, causing it to surge. The CEL has gone on and off a few times. Pulled the code and got a 42(speed sensor not communicating). First question what is the function of the speed sensor? Could it possibly be causing my surging problem? If not do I need to fix it? Really don't want to drop $150 right now. I have replaced the cap, rotor, and o2 sensor recently. The plugs were changed 20k ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My experience with a bad speed sensor was the engine would crap out at 55 mph. If the engine doesnt know how fast you are going the electronics cant control it properly.

You should be able to find a used one at a reasonable price of you cant afford a new one.

I'll make a trip down to the junkyard to see what I can find. Is there anyway to test it?
