Ok, I am pretty sure I know what car I have but want to be sure. It is a 1997 Corolla 4 dr sedan DX but I am confused which engine and chasis I have. for the longest time, I was convinced it was a 1.8 7afe AE102, but the manufacturer sticker says its an AE101 (and it is a North American corolla made in Canada). The Model number is AE101L-DEHNKK.
and for further confusion, the emission controll sticker has a section listed like this...
and I have a distributer with a 7afe sticker on it which was replaced...
Then I checked with wikipedia and found that the AE101 makes 1.6L 4afe for standard and CE models and AE102 makes 1.8L 7afe for DX and LE.
Probably best to go with the sticker on my car...I am just confused with my emission controll sticker (specifically the engine family section)..where it says VTY1.8V and under the EVAP family where it says 1.6L.
Anyone know where the engine stamp is? Is it underneith the distributer (have to take the distributer off??)?
Under the distributor, on the block, probably covered by grease, is the car's VIN. run that and it will come back with what the engine should be. The 7AFE will also have a reinforcing plate that helps to hold the engine and black together, with the oil pan mounting on it. If you can get under it you can see that plate; I believe the oil pan will also only be square in shape, whereas on the 4AFE you'll have the square and then the (black metal) pan will continue to your left (from under the car).
Shes an automatic...till i win the lotto and get my engine swap. and thanks gold94 and cipher. Ill check it out when get my car up in the air. gotta take the rims n tires off soon, winters comin!
Sweet! That makes sense with the manufacture sticker saying 1.6L and the 3 speed auto also explains why my engine runs at such high rpm just to do 100 km/h (approx 3100 rpm or more).
Sorry, just wanted to confirm my car actually has 4 gears (it has the L, 2, and drive). I went throughall of the gears to confirm it myself. I started with the gear selector in L, shifted in to 2, then shifted into D and kept on it for a bit until I heard it shift into another gear automatically. ...But even with this 4th gear, im still screaming at highway speeds (3000-3200 rpm)
It's not a fourth gear per se. The car has a lock up torque converter, that around 48-50mph, the impeller and propeller lock together to provide a more efficient mechanical coupling for cruising at highway speeds. This is what leads to the reduction in engine speed.
Oh, Cool...kind of...not really! I cant believe I am driving a 3 speed lmao I dont know how much longer I can take with this engine. I need some frickin power! I think im going to abandon all current projects and just start saving for a swap. 20V Silver or Blacktop...or maybe even something from an MR2 if I can
...and if I hit the lotto, Im going to convert the power to the back wheels, or all 4 hehe
