You can do some research on crutchfield.com and check out the depth measurements of the speakers that are compatible with the ones you previously found and compare the differences.

I used to run Kenwood Excelon Dual Mag's in the front doors with no clearance problems. I don't know how impossible they would be to find now, I still have mine and I'm not selling them. They sound too good. Heck, I'll use them as home speakers.
I ordered 5.25's for my fronts and found out the hard way they don't fit. Clearance to the window glass is fine, but the door card wouldn't fit over the speaker. I solved the problem by trimming material out of the door card. I also had to drill new mounting holes into the stock, black plastic that the speaker mounts into.
Do you have any pics? How does the door panel come off exactly? I am wanting to put 5.25" Alpine Type R's into a 1996 corolla and the magnets on those suckers are huge.
I did not take any pictures. I would take the panel off, and measure the gap between the lowered window / regulator arm and the back side of the speaker magnet. Then measure the speakers depth, probably by removing the speakers plastic surround. I already tossed my stock speakers or I would jsut measure it's depth for you. You can also measure the gap between the lowered window / regulator arm and the back side of the speaker magnet.
Stock speakers and connector are soldered to the speaker wire on both ends. You will need to break and clean this before attaching a new, short length of wire. Be wary of heating up the connectors too much as you will melt the plastic connectors they sit in.

Remove the screw on the door handle, remove the window handle, there is a little metal clip that holds it in behind the handle, some times hard to see, get a flat head screw driver and find the part where it ends and just try to push it off. Try not to lose it though. Then the top of the arm rest just pops off, it's held in with clips, and under it are two screws that you take out. Then the rest of the panel is held in by clips, find a corner and just gently pull all the way around is what I did. Then once it's off just angle it and fit the door handle through then just let it hang there.
the corollas I have owned and own 2 93 GLI and one 96 XLI have 5,25" speekers in the front and about the mounting depth I just made a thin spacers so its closer to the door card and the window rolled down without hitting the speaker
