9005/9006 to h4 conversion questions

I've purchased JDM style clear headlights for my 96 Corolla Dx. I performed a search and found the wiring diagram using a relay.
My first question is do I need to do anything else, like run power from the battery? Also I've seen hid kits that use ballasts, do I need those? And lastly, what watt bulb should I use?

Thanks

If your gonna run with hids, your going to need the ballast and a relay.

For the HIDs, are you going with a single H4 or a bixenon or a dualbeam H4 bulb? A single H4 HID you can just slap straight onto the ballast which will sit straight on the 9006 output. A dualbeam HID will have a halogen capsule alongside the H4 bulb itself which should run just fine off your 9005 connector. A real bixenon will depend on the wiring of the bulb and its electronics itself...

The 9006 lowbeams are positive-switched, meaning ground is always grounded and voltage is controlled by the headlight switch. The 9005 highbeams are neutral-switched, meaning voltage is always hot and the ground circuit is made or broken by the high-beam toggle. This is likely to cause headaches and why we need relays. You could try it with the full 9006/9005 setup and have the high-beam output of the relay going to your high-beam activation on the bixenon, but that's assuming it's controlled by a maintained voltage instead of just a pulse.

So if I use the bottom diagram do i need to use dual xenon bulbs? will i still need a ballast?

Any pics of others setups would be appreciated.

^ that diagram looks familiar lol

Basically what were trying to tell you is...Basically you got everything running right now for the H4 bulbs right!? So now you want to upgrade to some HID's

This has two options. Since H4 bulbs are typically a dual filament bulb (low and hi beam in one bulb). You can actually by HID H4 bulbs that are only one setting or two. (or also called BI-XENON). Bi-xenon is the way to go since you still want to have hi and low beam settings. But to have HID bulbs, no matter what, you have to have the ballast to run them. And it will simply install into your existing H4 conversion. Leave the relays and everyhtring that you have allready installed and adding the ballast and bulbs (whichever ones you choose...single or bi-xenon) will work!

Your diagram has been very helpful!
I believe I am getting terms confused. H4 is just a size of bulb like 9006, where Hid requires ballasts. So if i just want to do a H4 conversion, and not Hid then I wont need ballasts, right?

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

Correct, the H4 conversion only requires relays if you want both high beams and low beams to work. Ballasts are only for HID bulbs that will fit in the H4 sockets.

For what it's worth I'd recommend getting the H4 setup working first, that way you know the output from your relays is right before you start going for HIDs and their challenges.

H4 means the type of bulb socket...in other words the way it fits into the headlight.

They offer H4's that have a HID bulb (High Intensity Discharge). True HID bulbs require a ballast since they are gas charged bulbs.

H4 regular bulb is typicaly a dual filament bulb so to get the same high/lo effect with H4 HID bulbs you will need a Bi-Xenon bulb

Okay...I'm dizzy now
