93 into 97 1.8 engine swap

I have a 97 with a bad 1.8 engine, I have a good 1.8 from a 93. The problem I have run into is the intakes are different, the 97 has a port for the EGR and the 93 block does not. I don't know what to do here.

Please help me.

Also, will a 1.6 with an automatic 3 speed bolt up to 5 speed tranny.
I am only swapping the engines. good engine is from the car with the auto trans. I think both cars are 93's.

you'll need to swap all the parts from the 97 onto the 93 that are different. more or less, you'll end up just using the block from the 93...may even need to swap the heads.

The 93 is an OBD1, the 97 is an OBD2, its gonna be a pain in the ass to get everything to work right.

Whats wrong with the motor in it?

The motor in it now has a rod sticking out the side of the block. What we have done so far is this: we swapped the heads and the intakes, everything is torqued to specs, timing set, and is ready to install.

Everything else looks the same. We pulled the engine and trans together and will install the replacement motor and trans together as well.

Will keep you posted on how it turns out.

Hopefully you don't run into any issues with getting Check engine lights and crap, if there are sensors on the 97 thats not on the 93

We checked it out pretty close, the rest seems the same. But, we wont know till it's installed, I have an OBD 1 and 2 scanner that will help trouble shoot if needed.

I have access to an OBD2 scanner, no access to OBD1, so I'm SOL when my CEL comes on lol

you are not SOL my friend, you can use a jumper wire at the diagnostic connection that will make the CEL light flash the codes for you. So, yes you can pull codes without a scanner. I am certain the "how to" is posted in here somewhere, if not, I will post it.

I know you could so something like that, but I wasn't sure.

I'll look it up tomorrow and see what I come up with, my cars running wicked rich right now with the CEL on lol

The 96-97 blocks had a fitting for a knock sensor that enabled some decently aggressive timing to be run. It'd be worth looking into where that boss is (and if it could be easily machined into the 93 block) before you swap the engines over.

How agressive can you go on the pre 96 block?

I was thinking about tinkering with it but I'd rather not kill my Corolla xD

All 7A-FE have a knock sensor regardless of year. My 93 did.

Here's what we got so far.

This is what we had to do so far to make a 93 1.8 work properly into a 97.
Both engines came from corollas'.
Change the heads, used the head from the 97 due to the EGR port.
Change the intake manifold because they are different -same reason- EGR.

We got it all installed and were hooking up all the wiring, that's when we noticed the Crank Position Sensor, (well that sucked) so, we went to pull the oil pump (w/sensor port) from the bad engine, and cannot get the gear off, it must have seized when the engine blew, (the bad engine). Project delayed to say the least. I found an oil pump on ebay, new, for 70.00. Still looking for the gears the sensor feeds off of, I think it's around 40 bucks at the stealership.

Then we gotta change the oil pump, in the car, sucks again.

I am pretty sure there are no more surprises with electronics, but we will see.

Cant believe we didn't catch the crank sensor.

I will update when parts come in.
