95 corolla multiple problems please help

Hello all, i have a 95 corolla 1.6 automatic with 108,000 miles. I have had it for 3 months and have had a shaking/ vibration problem since i got it. I was 1st told that my driver side rear tire had a broken belt so i put a new one on with no change. I then suspected the axles or motor mounts. The axles SEEM fine but on the driver side i can wiggle the spline that goes in the tranny up/down and front to back. The inner and outer joints seem solid with no movement and good boots. The passenger side spline going into the trans only moves a tiny bit and again ther boots are fine with no joint movement. I was told by a mechanic that my motor mounts were "bottomed out" So today i changed all the mounts with not only no change but its actually worse! The shaking happens during acceleration but smoothes out when you let off or are cruising on flat road. I have been told it could be the torque converter or output shaft bearing where the axle spline goes in the tranny. The trans shifts like butter and goes in all gears as well as downshifting perfectly. I am so frustrated right nowe that any help would be greatly appreciated. The vibration is most noticable at a stop with your foot on the brake and have been told its a vaccum leak because he covered the throttle body with his hand and the car didnt stall. I got some starting fluid and sprayed every hose and intake hasket i could find and can not find a leak. Please help!! Thanks in advance, John

Despite your checks of the axles I will still suspect them as being the problem I have had people with the same symptoms replace axles and vibration went away.

Also make sure your wheel bearings are Ok too.

what do you think about the spline movement without any joint movement? is there a way that the spline has worn so it is loose in the tranny? Also i should clarify that the vibration is vaccum related. The drivetrain shake is violent now that the new mounts are in when accelerating or going up a hill.

Not to be mean, but you bought this car, even though it had a shaking/vibration problem?

Yes i bought the car with the problems but figured it was tires as it had been sitting and its in great shape with no rust and relatively low mileage. I could really use some input. Anyone?

ok so i went out and did alot of driving with the car today. I have been trying to diagnose it from the passenger seat as my gf does most of the driving but today i drove it myself. The shaking only occurs in what seems to be overdrive. This is confusing because from what i have read if i have overdrive i should have an od button which i do not. I hear 4 shifts every time i go through the gears. Anyway, the shaking happens in the final gear which sounds like the torque converter lockup and will shake anytime its given gas at 50 and up. If i floor it then it drops a gear and just goes with no shaking at all. I really need some direction here before i put anymore money in it. Thanks in advance.

That 4th gear is probably your torque converter lockup. You don't have overdrive, it's a 3 speed tranny.

You have what is commonly referred as torque converter shudder. Although this is not common in Toyota transmissions, the first inexpensive thing to try is draining and refilling the transmission with the correct fluid. There is a chance a previous owner could have used incorrect fluid.

I agree as well. I have seen it many times including my own corolla wagon.
