just got a 96 rolla

hey, just picked up my new car yesterday, iam delighted with it but just have a few questions.....

rustproofing: its just been done and i had a look underneath and some parts are black and some are clear, is this normal?
does rust proofing stop FURTHER corrosion or only prevent NEW corrosion ?

timing belt: how do they fair out with the extreme hot and cold temperatures?
my belt in nowhere near due for replacment kilometre wise but it was last replaced 6 years ago so is due time wise, what should i do ?

I have found rustproofing to only slow rust down. That clear area you are talking about check to see if it is sticky or if a coating of clear rust proofing has been sprayed.
If you have an air compressor you could buy a gallon of rust proofing and an air gun for spraying.
On timing belt, I changed mine at 50,000 miles and 12 years old because I was afraid of age on the belt. Belt looked fine when replaced, I also replaced water pump at the same time due to age concerns. I got my 95 Corolla in 2005 with 23,000 miles. It is now up to 83,000 miles.

it was even done in the wheel arches and along the sills.
iam from ireland so we never need to rust proof our cars so iam new to this
as for the belt i think she should be ok for another while so.....
it was done in 2006 with 68km on it and now has 85km

Sorry you were duped. Rustproofing (if it was done and done correctly), should have been one color. That one part is black and the other clear, raises a red "protection" will thwart rust from forming and keeping rust producing products (ie salt, mud, etc) from sticking to the underside of the car. It should retard, slow rust formation, but does not necessarily prevent it from reoccurring or starting somewhere else.

As for T-belt, you mentioned it was done in 2006, where the seals, (oil, camshaft, crankshaft) done as well, and were the parts that hold up the belt (ie tensioners, etc) also replaced. This is important if you want to keep the car for a while, because weak, tensioners, and leaky seals can shorten the life of the belt. The person/place you bought this car from should have a record of it, and/or it should be noted on the door or under the hood. As for hot and cold, the T-belt is subject to that, not only from outside air temps, but from the engine itself. A well made belt should be able to withstand these extremes until replacement time, (some can last longer).

One nagging question, though, if the previous owner was so intent on selling this car, why spend the money on undercoating, hence my opinion, you were probably duped.

the clear kind of sounds like "tintable" bed liner to me. it comes clear and you can add up t0 10% paint to make the bed liner the same color as your truck.

ok i bought the car from a garage.
when i went to view the car it was orgional, so when i looked underneath i seen every bit of rust, and to be fair there was a good bit, but i was happy enough that there was nothing too bad, the car itself is 99% rust free so that should give you an indication as to the level of rust underneath.
now as i said iam from irelan and know nothing about rustproofing whatsoever but would it be possible that the black is a paint to try cover up some of the rust?
i could try take some pics but not today as its raining.

oh also i asked the owner/salesman about rustproofing and he said you should get it done to save the car and its usually $100.........does this price sound right?
then when i rang to say i was coming to collect the car he said he rustproofed it for free ????
straight away i asked myself why would he do that for free.....????

As you said you inspected under the car before it was rust proofed. Since you didn't pay he may have used what he had left. Usually the clear rustproofing is for areas that would be visible like under the hood. I haven't bought rustproofing for a while but I guess thw cost is about $25.00 a gallon which would be enough to spray your car with some left over.
The black you see is probably rust proofing and not paint if it is thick and tacky.

Your winters will be worse here. I remember seeing roses in bloom outside my son's apartment in South Belfast on Christmas day a few ago. He is going back to Ireland this summer for a visit.

Until you post some high resolution photos of the areas you're referring to it will be impossible to tell for sure.
