Seems my 1.6 hates when I do nice things for it.

Hey all,
This is my first post on ToyotaNation. It's nice to be in a place where all Yota' owners can unite. I have a 92 Celica 4AFE, that being said I realize that I'm in the Corolla Forum but please, hear me out. I've already talked to Celica peeps on other forums SPECIFICALLY addressing Celicas but wanted a different point of view and figured that you and I have the same engine so it's all good I hope.

My little AFE started giving me issues today, it's my commuter everyday (I drive about 120mi a day to work round trip) and has been pretty decent to me so far, recently I had to replace the trans though (MT). I got it back on Monday and changed the oil, air filter and sprayed out the throttle body, and up until tonight it felt the best it ever has.

So, tonight I got on the highway and drove the usual 60 or so mi home, car felt fine the whole way. When I was getting off my exit, I put it in neutral as I always do to coast down the offramp when I noticed that my idle was surging between 2-3k. It wasn't just the tacho moving, the engine was revving with it. Anyways, the rest of the way home is stop and go...I noticed that at red lights it would surge for a few seconds then seem to hold at 2k for a bit, then surge a bit again but way less aggressively. Judging by the other stuff I've been reading, I'd guess vacuum leak, IAC or TPS. Anybody have a similar issue and have any luck fixing any of the above?

I hear a sort of woosh sometimes when I start it up and drive away, I guess I thought it might be air in the coolant but could that be a vacuum leak? Any help is appreciated.

Cheers

bad idle speed motor, bad throttle position sensor

those two are the most likely culprits.

IAC. 99% of the time idle problems on FI engines are caused by the IAC.

Continuous high idle is a vacuum leak.
