gen 7 1996 Corolla engine replacement

I don't know if anyone else has run into this problem. I swapped out a blown 1.6 in my 96 SD with a good 1.6 from a 97 DX. I didn't change the wiring harness or the PCM, it all looked the same. I have everything hooked up, all the lights and accesories work fine and the car turns over but won't fire. The CEL doesn't come on when I turn the key to on position. I plugged in my OBD2 scanner to check for codes and it won't link to the PCM but the CEL now comes on and the car will start and run for as long as the scanner is hooked. Runs great but it smells like it might be running rich. What the hell did i do? Any suggestions? Both motors were manual trans and I did save the harness and PCM from the donor.

Thanks

You need a ecm (computer) from 1997. In Chicago land any car before 1996 doesn't require emission test. Any car after 1997 require emission test. What I'm trying to say is any car built before 1996 is a OBDI plug and OBDII is for car after 1997. Hope this will help.

Both the 1996 and 1997 should be OBDII compliant. 1995 was the last year for OBDI.

It sounds like you're missing a power or ground somewhere, check that all pins at the pcm wiring harness have power and ground as they should. All Data should have a connector view with legend of what pin is what.

Thanks for the help. I didn't want to reply because I a feel like a moron. I missed a ground. It was hanging from the bottom of the wiring harness behind the intake manifold, dangling by the starter. As soon as I attached it it ran like a charm. After Pulled the interior and replaced the ECU of course. Serves me right. THX

At least you found the ground at home. My brother made me take him 150 miles away where his car quit just so I could hook up the ground on his Neon!
