95 Spedo working incorrectly

The spedometer on my 95 sits at 0 mph until the car get going about 50, then it jumps up to 65 or so, and goes up from there. I think I want to check the sensor before taking the cluster apart. How do I find the sending unit? How to troubleshoot?
Also the trip ODO will go from 000000 to 111111 to 222222 etc. not necessarily at .1 mile intervals. Cluster removal required for that one?

Thanks,

John

Sounds more like a bad cluster than a bad speedometer to me, but it's good to test.

Does the cluster consist of the odo and trip odo but not the spedo?

the gauge cluster is...the gauge cluster. whole thing is one 'part', but the speedo/odo can be removed from the cluster assembly.

Is the transmission shifting normally otherwise? Is the engine light on when the problem is occurring?

Had same issue with my 93. Odometer worked fine just same issue with speedo. Swap your cluster.

Turns out that the cluster had some loose parts. There is a retainer bar that holds the gears in on the trip odo. That was flopping around. Same with some of the gears.
I picked up a nice clean cluster at a local dismantler and swapped out. The replacement speedo needle sits on the pin when the cluster is out of the car but moves up to 15 mph when the plugs are connected. I'll reinstall it with more tension on the needle spring tomorrow.
It's way easy to R n R the cluster. Nice.
