Car cranks but will not start.

I have a problem my 95 corolla 1;6 cranks and will not start.....i replaced the plugs and also the oil because of what seemed to be a flooded engine...smell of gas in the oil...i know im getting fuel to the cylinders but it still wont start ..just crank....my battery is old but i had some friends give me a boost and still no start...it happened just one morning when i went out to start the car it just wouldn't start it was brutally cold the night before....Another thing do you need to see a check engine light to hook up a code tester......Ive never had a check engine light come on since i bought the car.....Im baffled..also i was wondering if an o2 sensor could be the cause.....Any help will be appreciated...Thanks...John..from Canada

Pull a plug wire and point it to metal have someone crank to see if you have spark. You have fuel since you smell gas, just no spark. Could be a bad coil.

I would say 95% of the time you get a car cranks and no start its the distributor you have to work on. Sometimes its the coil and sometimes its more. The easiest way to check for spark is an inductive timing light. You wont always see a spark or get the plug grounded well but you WILL see the flash of the timing light strobe.

Sounds like it was flooded.

ya sounded like it was flooded. A trick if you think it's flooded pedal to the floor and crank and it should sputter up. Happened with my 89 corolla (used to pump once or twice before we started it in the morning) with my 96 never have had a problem

Canadian cars could also be different. But 1995 was the last year before the hookup code tester. Instead, in the 1995, you check the computer by putting a paper clip in some connectors in the little box under the hood called diagnosis. There is a thread that explains it more completely.

I don't even what to know about 40 below. I think its too cold when it is 45 above. Glad you got it running.

Of course your "pumping" had no effect since that technique is left over from the days of carburetors.

Unless you had some weird model your 89 should have been FI.
