No, it tells you that you have no oil and are damaging your engine irreparably, as in you'll be buying a new car soon if you let it run this low on oil more than once or maybe twice if you're lucky.

Check the dipstick regularly. Make sure the oil level is within the recommended range as stated in your owners manual.

You go by the manufacturers recommended oil change interval.

If your oil level is correct and the light comes on at idle, the pressure sensor is bad and needs replacing.

Or the oil pump is stuffed. Much more likely to be the sensor, but it can be a costly mistake to just replace it without checking the pump.

ya our oil light is not like newer cars where it'll come on after a certain amount of distance to tell you to change the oil.

My oil light came on one time, i was entering a highway took the ramp faster than i sud have and the light came on for a brief second. Well once i got home that day. I checked my oil and up it was barely on the dipstick.

So if you see the oil light as mentioned deal with it right away. And if you can check your oil regularly and never have it come on that would be ideal.

Technically, the idiot light is different from what you're mentioning. A lot of cars now have service reminders but at least in our Mitsubishi it's a nightmare to set up and never has been used.

Or that you're cornering hard enough to starve the pickup.

That said even when the oil has been two quarts low I haven't seen the light go on during normal driving, so yeah it's kind of a maintenance light...when it comes on, you're likely to need really expensive maintenance.
