Crunching sound in drive

94 corolla with 126000 miles. Got in the car this am and there is a loud crunching sound while in drive. Smooth as can be in reverse. I was on the way to the airport so had to switch cars and couldn't look at it. Is that indicative of a transmission that has had it? Approximate cost to repair? BTW it's a1.6 L automatic. Thanks..

Would a low differential fluid level cause this problem? If so, what are the chances that refilling the differential fluid might fix the problem? If I have reached this point, is there too much damage done?

Yes, once it's broken it's broken assuming that's what it is. Drain the fluid, look for heavy metal.

try flushing the trans fluid first to see if it helps. If the differential has been damaged then it is surely an expensive repair.
