no spark

i am a avid reader here at toyotanation.com, but have not really posted anything. well i ran into a dilemma, i bought a 96 1.8 corolla with a blown motor, we switched the motors out and put a newer motor in and cant seem to get spark. i put a new crank angle sensor in and get readings from that, so that is good. the distributor was from the old motor, and had 2 plugs 1- 4 wire plug and 1- 2 wire plug on it and mine is a 4 wire plug only. my friend tried to rewire it and make it a 4 wire plug, needless to say it didn't work and the original distributor for the motor was gone. I went to the junk yard and got another distributor, the right one this time but it was from a Geo. again no spark! so i returned the distributor and got my 100 bucks back. and the car has been sitting for about 4 months, due to having other hobbies to attend to. So now im back at it and ordered another distributor for it. I also ordered a igniter as well. is there anything else that could be wrong? by my friend rewiring the distributor and running hot leads, could he have burn the igniter? what else could it be other then the igniter and distributor? thanks in advanced

You could have fried the ECM with your mixing of parts and wires.

ok got it running (semi) got spark now after new used distributor and new used igniter. but will only run on starting fluid. not a clogged cat cus it isnt connected at the moment got lots gas to the fuel rail so filter is good? every thing is plugged and all connections are made, spark plugs were new 4 months ago but it sat for 4-5 months and before it sat we tried getting it running but no spark but had gas. it has gas and spark now. i know it aint the plugs cus it idles and sounds like new with starting fluid. Bad gas? what else could it be it starts then dies instantly but will stay running with starting fluid

Since it will run on ether you have proven it now has spark, but it DOESNT have fuel. You need to find out if you have a working fuel pump, pressure at the fuel rail, and electrical pulses to the injectors.

If you are REAL smart you will confirm these without more explanation. If you need assistance post what you found and I'll point you in the right direction.

ok i found out the hard way it is getting gas to the rail lol but the gas smells like its stale, the spark plugs are black but show spark when its turning over. if it runs on ether does it tell you sparks plugs are good? i dont know how to meter the fuel injectors. i do have a ohm reader but dont know how to read for the injectors. i could find out, Google is great for that. im leaning towards bad gas, the car sat for about a year and a half in a tow yard with a blown motor and car still has the original gas. just under 1/4 tank left. whats a good additive for bad gas.

There is NO additive to fix bad gas. You need to remove it. Easiest way I know is to hotwire the fuel pump and pump it into a can, then refill with good gas.

Todays (crappy) fuel is usually only good for a mint or two of sitting. Even less for some gasahol mixes. (my experience)

ok i had about 1/8th of a tank of gas i put sea foam in it and put about 10 bucks in gas 93 octane, new plugs and wires and after some beating the balls out of it, it will finally start on it own and stay running with a bit of throttle pressure. if i let it idle on its own it will stall like it has no gas what so ever but it will start right back up. if i higher the idle to where it stays running about 1300 rpm and shift into gear it stalls (automatic). would this be the tps? its throwing a engine code but cant check it until tomorrow. also i put my hand over the tail pipe and barely anything is coming out very lil pressure and when i rev it up its SUPER HOT exhaust with very lil pressure. looking at the cement under the tail pipe is black black soot water. clogged cat or muffler? remember this car had 155k on it but had a blown motor knocking real bad. a toyota at 155k should not have a blown motor especially when a old lade drove it before me this motor now is out of a 95 and runs like a dream when i can get it to stay running. im thinking the exhaust is clogged up some where?

disconnect the exhaust before the cat, see how it runs.

Since the car sat for so long- After you repair the engine problems, you MUST inspect the brakes. I can almost guarantee there will be problems needing attention. One sure sign is if you cant see through your brake fluid.
