96 corolla - problem with NEW shocks

i just replaced the rear shocks/struts, springs and mounts. there is a loud metal on metal banging sound coming from both sides. the sound is coming from the back seat where the mounts attach. the middle bolt moves up and down (the bolt from the strut, not the bolts holding the mount in place)

does this bolt just need to be tightened? i was told that you are not supposed to have to tighten this bolt...when i look at the old strut, this area looks different. the old part has one large nut and there is very little thread left on the bolt. the new part has the same large nut, but a smaller bolt coming up out of it with another smaller nut on there...i am confused. please help
i'm going to take a picture to show what i am talking about

thanks

tighten the center nut more, use the hex to hold the shaft. Did you get all the parts separate or did you buy a quick strut?

i got the parts separate and i really regret that now. heres a pic of the 2 nuts

u cant see in the pic that the large nut has scratched the metal of the car underneath it from moving around. i wasnt sure which nut to tighten, or to do both, which one i should tighten first...
i sent an email to monroe too, just in case. since i have read that they have been known for some faulty parts

I think you lost the spacer. There is a metal collar which acts as a spacer on the stock assembly, you cannot tighten the nut enough without the spacer. You could try to stack some washers or another nut under maybe, I don't know. I lost my spacer on one side and ended up finding another one from a parts bin at a hardware store that was close enough in size to work. Probably a fluke that I found it.

Yeah you need the spacer that goes under that huge bolt. Just looking at the picture I can tell the bolt is way too low with all that extra thread.
