95 DX 1.8 Engine Stumble.....
I've done a search for "Jerking" "Bucking" "surging" and read through all the posts I found. It seems that its a common issue for these 1.8l engines to start this jerking like they do. Maybe someone here has some additional suggestions for things i can try to solve the issue.
About 2 years ago i replaced the timing belt myself. I ran the engine after the repair to make sure everything was ok and i smelled rubber burning. I found out i screwed up and installed the guide washer on the crank backwards that keeps the belt on the crank pulley and it rubbed through a couple of the grooves on the new belt. So i replace the the Belt one more time and installed everything correctly this time. I drove around the block a few times and when i pulled up in my Driveway suddenly the engine started stumbling really badly and died. From then on it was difficult to start and once running it was difficult to keep running. I thought i screwed up my timing so i managed to get the car down to my Local Toyota Dealer and had them look at it. They said my Timing was fine, but my Ignition coil was bad. They wanted an outrageous amount of money to replace the coil so i opted to take the car as is and replace it myself. I Bought a replacement and installled it and the car seemed to drive fine. They next day on the way to work i noticed that i had a strange stumble or jerking that i would feel when on the freeway. If i was on a flat road and barely needing to touch the throttle pedal to maintain speed, the jerking was really steady and constant. If i had to accelerate it was ok though. The problem eventually increased to the point where the car would jerk violently all the time, around town, on the highway, accelerating, cruising, even in neutral i could raise the rpms to the point where the engine would start cutting out. Its most noticable when approaching the shift points now. The jerking is particuarily bad between the 1-2 and 2-3 shift but if i push the car hard enough it will accelerate through the stumble from 3-4
So what i have done is this so far:
Replaced the Plugs (had bosch learned of issues with them switched to Champion and then NGK)
Replaced the cap 2 times
Repalced the rotor 2 times
Replaced the Coil 2 times
Tried two sets of Wires
swapped the Crank Position sensor from a freinds car
Checked for vaccum leaks
This has been going on for a couple of years now. I Learned to just deal with it. I decided to give it one more shot and decided toreplaced the coil again and i had about 50 miles of good driveability again with no jerking at all! but it started coming back slowly and by the time i had gone a couple hundred miles its just as bad as ever.
Any suggestions?
