loose half-shaft

I have a 93 Geo Prizm. I regularly hear a clunk/tap sound from the front of the car when immediately accelerating or letting off of the gas. After inspection I found that the driver’s side half-shaft has substantial play; i.e. I can rotate it slightly back and forth with my hand. The sound is similar to what I hear when driving, so I think this may be the problem.

Can I just replace the half-shaft, or do you think something else should be replaced as well, such as the female part on the transmission where the half-shaft splines fit into?

Just replace the whole shaft. The work involved in fixing a half isnt worth the time effort and greasy hands. You may have to replace the seal too.

Glad you found the trouble semi easily. Some look and still dont find the play!

I did the CV joints before and it really wasn't worth the small $ saved rather than replacing the shaft.
