How do you remove Rear View Mirror?

Does anybody know how to remove the rear view mirror? It looks like there is a plastic cap that could be popped off but I dont know for sure. I tried just pulling with my hand but it didnt feel like it wanted to move. I also tried twisting the mount but that doesnt feel like a good idea either lol. I dont want to break it. I want to paint it

Pop the cap off with a flat head, then unscrew the two philips head screws holding it in. Make sure you hold the mirror as you remove it as the metal bracket that holds it in can sometimes pop out of the mirror.

Thanks for the extra tip. I managed to pop the plastic cap off but I couldn't unscrew the 2 screws with a screw driver. They are really in there good lol. Ill try a ratchet

Buy a craftman #2 phillips. They have the BEST phillips profile. I have one I have abused for 20 years with no wear and it fits screwheads perfectly.

Whats with Toyota mirrors anyway! Mine broke one day and just flopped around. I looked at 10 cars before finding one that wasnt broken like mine.

20 year!...Now thats quality! I ended up using a Jobmate Phillips bit (though I think I used a # 3 bit and it seemed to fit snug in the screw).

First one I had went floppy and the day/night broke. Second one worked fine until I flipped it to night once and... crunch! Followed by bits of plastic raining out of the housing. I finally put a third one in from a first gen RAV4 that worked fine.

Worth noting one bolt on mine was in so tight I chewed up the head getting it out. Not sure if it was cross threaded or had Loctite on it, been too long. In the end I had to use a Grabit to get it out, so be careful or you'll be spending $10-15 on a set of screw extractors. I find Wiha makes the best screw drivers, with their anti-cam out cuts in the tip and comfort grip models, but I wouldn't spend more unless you make your living with them.
