First, make sure that there's nothing wrong the engine (spark plugs, timing, fuel quality, worn rings, etc).

Put a 32/26 Weber carb on it.
Gives better performance and better milage.

Or an EFI system from a 22R-E.
Gives more smoother performance and better milage.
Not too hard to wire up the computer and injectors.
For that matter, increase capacity by using the entire 22R-E but use the 20R head (higher compression ratio).

You can also change your diff ratio.
Higher number (eg 4.1) give snappier acceleration, lower top speed, higher fuel consumption on the highway and speedo reads higher than real speed.
Lower number (eg 3.727) give worse accelration, higher top speed, lower fuel consumption on the highway and speedo reads lower than real speed.
