Does anyone have any information regarding using the following Dorman 911-615 Evaporative Emissions Charcoal Canister instead of the one directly from Toyota? The price differential is about $400 and since my Corolla is a 1998, I would rather not spend that much unless absolutely necessary. My mechanic was unaware of this or he just would prefer me to use the one from Toyota but I really have to conserve money.
Any advice, especially from mechanics, would be greatly helpful. Thank you so much!
Have you tried reaching out to our resident forum Parts Dealership. Last I checked the differential between the cannisters was about $50-150 depending on the dealership. Usually the ones who sell online are the cheapest, the nearest in store only dealerships are special order pay now pick up in a few days always charge an arm or a leg.
Dorman's been around for a long time. They make a lot of parts, look at some reviews. I'm pretty sure you can find the EVAP canisters for around 80 bucks on ebay. My I ask why you are doing it? My check engine light comes and goes intermittently but if I keep the tank below half for a week or two it goes away.
Personally I would trust them if I where going to do it, I just haven't bothered yet. But you better make sure it is the exact part you need. Most people complain aftermarket shit doesn't work when they bought the wrong part.
Now I am sure the toyota one is higher quality and will last longer but i'd rather take my chances and save a few dollars as yes this is a 98 corolla, if it was a mercedes, porsche, ferrari, etc I would spend some money but for a beater/economy car its not worth investing much seeing as the value is around maybe 1,000 USD these days.
