Well as you may all know or not know, i bought an AE 86 Corolla. 1987 SR5 with 4a-c and auto. Its kind of bare, but who cares. I bought the car because the price was right and i need a fuel efficent car.
I know that it is a desirable car, but i dont need it for drifting or anything. Here is my beef; the car is an auto with a slow motor. I can change that, but to swap in a 4age with a manual requires two things: time and money, which, ironically, are two things i dont have.
What should i do? i REALLY need a car for milage (cant afford my truck @ 17 mpg, trust me if i could, i would drive it to a car any day.) Should i suck it up and save and do the swap and drive it? Should i sell it? Or, my favorite stratagy, see if one of you wants to trade a 4cyl 5 speed FWD corolla or camry from the same era.
Opinions? Other thoughts? If you wanna trade, get me details, ill do the same. Ideally i can just get a car and go, not have to mess around with motor and trannie swaps. If you want a good build up car, mine is one. its in fair to good condition and is mechanically sound. I just replaced the fuel pump and the previous owner had the timing belt and all ignition components done 1k miles ago.

Hm.....seems like your more concerned about fuel efficiency. You can sell your truck and swap in the engine into the 86 so you have a better fuel efficient car than your truck as well as a quicker car. That or suck it up. Do what you feel is better for you financially.

Well, thats the thing, i need my truck to make money. I work at a grocery store, but i do electrical work on the side. Also, i live in central PA, so my family needs a 4x4 to get around in the snow. I am told that swapping in a manual trannie will solve a lot of issues that the 4A-C had. That came from a Toyota service advisor.
My friend may have an offer for me. He has a B2000 mazda pickup 4 cyl 5 speed carbourated. Its a blast to drive, and i may just trade him. his dad gets like 30 m.p.g. with it, which is a lot better than the 17 i get with the truck. But im not sure. If i could hunt down a transmission, ecu, shift kit, pedal kit, clutch set up, bell housing, flywheel, and the crossmember for less than 500, id probably swap it. Problem is that everyone has FWD corollas, not an A.E. 86.
Im still open for trades, suggestions, etc.

alright. Anyone wanna trade me a FWD corolla or camry (pref. 5 speed) that runs and is road legal for my A.E. 86? Kinda rare, its the coupe with the baby blue. If you would have a trade, the only way id take an auto is if it were EFI equiped.

What motor are you gonna swap in? i looked at your thread...
I WISH!!!!!!!!!!
20 year old Michigan State University student = no money to spend on a car
hypothetically speaking though. I would kill to have a Silver or Black top 20v 4AGE. everyone seems to be loving the 4A-GZE's but I dunno about them. sure it's already got a supercharger and its innards are already prepped for forced induction so let's just throw on a big turbo instead and call it a day!
I like the sound of 20 valves as opposed to 16, and if the N/A 20v doesn't give enough power then you can always reinforce it and put a turbo on that and get more power.
If you're working on a car to be your own, why not go all the way instead of giving 80%?
of course this is just hypothetically speaking, and people do have limits to the amount of time and money they can spend on their car.
In actuality though. I don't think I'll be swapping or modding my engine at all. the body is starting to rust, and I don't park in a covered garage so it would be sitting out all year long as well. not worth it. maybe someday if I find an AE82 sedan with a nice body...
Lol and you think a 4A-GE swap is going to be more fuel efficient than the 4A-C? come on man, get into reality, also consider the amount of gas you can buy with the price of the swap.

If the overall car is still in good condition (little rust) and not give you any major problems, keep it. Remind yourself that the CAR IS PAYOFF and hopefully your insurance isn't HIGH!!!! It is a GREAT LITTLE CAR......there are a lot of aftermarket parts for this car compare to it's newer models!!
I think hes sold that AE82 a while back, because that site hasnt been updated..
Your car wouldnt actually be that hard to put into shape. It needs new doors (iirc) and some wheel well work as well as new sideskirts. If I was in your neck of the woods I could fix it up probably in one weekend, depending on what is found after cutting away all the rusty parts.
Heres work done to my rolla.
I say get rid of the AE85 and buy yourself a Tercel or a AE101+ Corolla..Or another any car with a 22RE, heard they are pretty good on gas...
trying dude trying! lol! problem is i dont have the money to go buy a car. this one runs and drives just fine and needs only minor things to be perfect, however, i need to be able to go places if it snows, and to fix the toyota 4a-c hesitation problem, i gotta either put in a carb or a manual trannie, both of which cost money. trust me, if i wanted a project car, id def. keep this.
Id just drive it and forget about it, but something in me nags me because its a RARE breed. one cant just let a rare car rot/fall apart. It would pain me too much.
Thats why i wanna trade for a car, actually i dont care what it is to tell you the truth, that gets good gas milage and is FWD. Make offers people! lol. anyone got an older Sentra? id drive one of those. Any Japan car from back in the day that got good milage is something ill consider.
