ok when you say you replaced the plugs and wires did you use o.e,if not theres your problem, any code being put out?also remove the air flow senser and look inside to see the resister,if its full of fuzz or whatever then spray some brakecleaner and let it dry, dont spray to hard.you dont want to brake the resister, any exhaust leak like the front pipe donute?put the car in drive and hold hard on the brakes, let the engine flex you might hear a leak if so you need to fix that too.
My 01 solara gets 18 mpg i have been trying to trake it down part by part. I started at the air filter and have been moveing my way back. my next step is the exhaust system starting at the cat.
Did you change your 02s?
denso Iridium IK16. what is the OE plug for this car?
The O2 sensor is coming by mail order.it should be here in a few days. i just filled up the car and set the trip odometer to 0. i asked my niece to drive it for the next few days..then i will fill it up again. after that i can calculate the mileage on her car properly.
Ok Well If You Ordered A Jobber Send It Back It Wont Work Well, plug Is Denso Sk16r11,you Need Original When It Comes To Ignition And O2 Sensors I Know Its Expensive But The Jobbers Wont Work Right Soo,,,you Really Have No Choice, ive Seen This Many Times
i took the car to Az this morning. it found code P0420. from researching this forum, i am going to order the Pre cat O2 sensor. if that does not solve the problem, i will replace the cat. i dont know why the CEL does not show..maybe the bulb is bad?
took the car to Costo to have the tires change but the waiting time was like 4 hrs long..Anyone has any experience with BFG premier touring tires?
we had the same code on our 2000 corolla. Replaced the sensors, code came back a week later. Had to replace the cat. Most of the time it's the sensors but not in our case. Just my two cents.
do you have a exhaust leak, front pipe donut, put the car in drive with foot hard on the brake and put it in reverse, rev if you hear a load nosie there is your problem,do this first
your on the right track, that p0420 code as defined in the power train manual can only be the three way cat or an 02 sensor
in the diagnosis process per All Data Pro it mentions to check for a Gas leak on the exhaust, i would make sure you 100% know that gas is not leaking from this car, id hope that wasnt the problem and it is just an 02 sensor
blasting the a/c and heat will not net a 1.8L motor 12mpg
flooring it nearly ALL the time will also not net 12mpg
i cant believe anyone even suggested that, its so far fetched

Hi everyone,
need your expertise on this. i helped out my niece by changing the engine oil, transmission oil and filter, spark plugs (denso irdium plug), serpentine belt (gator brand) and the belt tensioner. i thought this would give the car better gas consumtion. everything went fine. a week later, she complaint to me that the car waste gas like crazy. she had to fill twice this week. where she used to just fill once. i test drove the car for about 6-7 miles and can actually see the gas needle moved about 1/8 inch. this car used to be very gas economical.
i checked and cant see nor smell any gas leakage. spark plugs were pre-gap correctly.
what should i check to remedy this problem?
Just wondering if you found a solution to the problem?
Besides it sucking fuel like crazy how is the overall performance?
