Bad Strut-Mount or Coil-Spring?

I hear banging noise (from front wheel) everytime hitting the pumper, so I jacked the front wheel up and was able to use my hand to push the Coil-Spring up and down a little. That means the coil-spring is bad or the Strut-Mount? (Struts, ball joint and sway bar link have been replaced recently - 1999 Corolla VE).

Thanks.

So replacing the mounts fixed the noise problem? I've noticed the same noises and was thinking of replacing the struts but if it's just the mounts it'll save me some $$$.

Yes, it fixed the problem, I don't hear any banging noise anymore.
If your Corolla is over 5 years old and has over 60k miles, you might want to replace the struts as well since you're going to have to open them all up anyway. Those Corolla struts don't last very long, they'll ruin your tires.

I bought 4 Monroe (front & rear) struts for $57 each @ Autozone(the 4th one was free after mail in rebate).
2 front strut mounts for $35 each.
You'll need a spring-compressor, I got one from Sears for $59 (Sears item# 00971466000) (rental tool from AutoZone did not work for me). And BE VERY CAREFUL! when removing the coil springs. Good Luck.

I'm looking at RockAuto.com and they have some various mounts. They also have full strut assemblies with "replacement bearing plate, upper and lower spring isolators, upper spring seat, coil spring (where applicable), boot kit, and a premium Monroe Sensa-Trac® strut" for about $160 each front (for a 98 Corolla that is) if you don't want to deal with removing the spring. I've bought a few things from them with decent service.

btw, thanks vtd for the info.

Has anyone used this entire assembly. I need to replace my GF's struts and this seems like a good deal for the whole setup.
