I tried replacing the tape deck with a cd player and so far it's not been easy. It was much easier on my 95 rolla but I guess where the 99 has the alarm and stuff its a bit tricky. How do I install an aftermarket deck and still be able to keep my alarm (factory) and my dome light working? I just removed the tape deck and nothing works now. Also, not all wires will be used on the aftermarket deck. Any suggestions on what to do or what not to do? Thanks!
first, buy a Toyota wire harness from walmart or canadian tire so you can connect all the wires to the right ones, don't sit there and cut the harness.
You probably blew a fuse if the other stuff doesn't work, the alarm should work and its not connected to the radio for anything.
well after a few hours at the car, I hooked everything back up the normal way and still got nothing to work. I looked for the radio fuse but there was no fuse with that specific name, so I started checking them all. I got to the dome fuse and that one was gone. I replaced it and my aftermarket deck worked, the dome light worked, and believe it or not, my alarm started working again . Weird I know, but glad everything works again.
I have another question tho and see if anyone can help me out. I have the alarm thing down by the gear shift that says "toyota security" with a little red light next to it but there is also something else next to the light. To me, it looks like a little mic. Anyone know what that is? I also have a 2 button remote and use the first button to arm/disarm the alarm, but when I press on the second button, the light on the remote comes on but nothing else happens. Is it an option that my car probably don't have? It's just the basic ve model. Thanks Ren69 for your help!
The 2nd light on the remote is probably the "panic" button.
As for the "little mic" that might be the switch for valet parking. So the alarm won't constantly keep going off if you ever take it to a valet parking facility, but I'm not 100% sure.
One final question. All the lights are out for the climate control. Everyone of them actually. Everything else works, but when I turn on my lights at night, the gauges and the stereo is the only things that come on. I checked the fuses and never seen anyone bad, but which particular fuse would that be for? The heaters/vents and everything works, just no lights. Thanks!
one bulb for the whole thing? I noticed that the cig lighter bulb is burned out. Is it possible that the bulbs are connected some how so when one goes the other goes? also, that peanut size bulb you mentioned, is it right in the back of the hvac or do I have to take the whole thing apart. When I took out the screws for it, it was in there really snug. I must have to let something go to be able to pull it the whole way out I guess. Thanks everyone
It should be a standard peanut bulb size 194 or 168, can't remember which. There is also a colored condom on top of the bulb that should be transferred over to the new one to retain the original tinted color.
If you goto a dealer and ask the parts counter guy, he can print out a detailed diagram indicating all the locations of the various interior bulbs where you just point out the ones that are burnt out.
As for multiple bulbs burning out, this seems to be a common occurrence... since the same happened to me after replacing the climate control bulb, my rear defogger bulb went, and the shifter bulb for the transmission went also shortly after that. My guess is that age of the bulb plays a factor.
Replacement is a simple DIY job, you just need a flat head screwdriver or panel puller and a screwdriver to remove a few screws, locate the bulb and change it.
I had the climate control out, but could only pull it out a small way, not enough to see the back. What else to I need to do to get it out all the way?
hmmm... sounds like whoever installed the alarm piggybacked it off the wrong fuse. When you think about it, the reason to put an alarm in a car is to protect the car and things like your aftermarket stereo, so why would you piggyback the alarm with the stereo fuse. Amateur installers...

There are two screws, one on each side near the bottom of the console (black plastic area)
One should be on the side near the cigarette lighter, the other one near the temperature slider.
You should remove the tabs on all 4 sliders and the A/C button and keep them in a safe place.
Once you get those removed, get a firm grip on the entire console piece and just rip it straight out.

That's exactly what was screwing me up the whole time Oh well, I guess people will see the light blinking and stay away from it hopefully

Sounds like your describing the 93-97 corollas to me, but I dunno. Mine is different (99). I can get the trim and everything off, and unscrew the bolts for the hvac, and pull the hvac part about half way out then it goes tight and can't remove it enough to see the bulbs on the back. I will probably have to let something go or maybe I can reach my hand around the back. I'm guessing it could be a similar type bulb with the socket just like the gauge ones. I'll try looking at it earlier but it gets dark 4:30pm now so it's hard to do
