USA CEL and OBTP0146

Hello All,

I have a 2000 carolla LE with 130K miles. Recently the check engine light came on. The OBD code was P0146. I was told by auto zone that it means either the catalytic converter or the Oxygen sensor needs to be replaced.

Now i have a few questions:-

1) How do i find out which componment should be replaced first.
2) Is this a common thing in a caroll after 130K miles
3) Is this that is changing the catalytic converter and the oxygen sensor something that i could do my self. I am a biginner and i am wondering if i could rent a hydralic jack and soe tooks it should be a snap.

Please do let me know what you all think

thanks
ashish

P0146 O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank #1 Sensor #3).

The list for Bank #1 sensors includes Sensor #1, 2 and 3. Guessing this is the 02 sensor after the CAT (last 02 sensor is exhaust system). No activity may mean the ECU is not receiving any voltage, too low of voltage; the 02 sensor is slow to respond, etc.

The #1 and 2 sensors do fail, but first time dealing with this sensor (code). Changing the sensor would be a DIY job; the sensor would be under the car behind the Cat installed in the exhaust system.
