Corolla 1998

Hi.
Dealer told my wife when she got her car inspected that exhaust expansion module is burning out at the end, and that can leak gas and she could get asphixated?.
I do notice that exhaust is getting a little noisy, and did recently look under the car and saw that is starting to burn away, but I do think he oversold the problem to her.
Question is............. is only solution to replace this $300 part? Or..... can I put some muffler patch type of **** on it?
Thx.
Bob

Definitely take it to an exhaust shop and get a second opinion. I'm not exactly sure what a "exhaust expansion module" is...

This is the part of the exhaust system that is a sleeve that looks like the toy thing where you put your fingers in and can't get out.

I'm shocked that I actually understood that...LOL.

Try starting your car when it's cold (WHEN IT'S COLD) and blocking the exhaust pipe with your hand. It should either push your hand away or the car should try to die. If you hear hissing coming from the front then at least you know they weren't lying about the leak. I would still let an exhaust shop handle it...
