power steering fluid<=>automatic transmission fluid

i've been looking around the net and found some boards say you can use automatic transmission fluid (ATF) dexron iii as replacement for power steering fluid.

would substituting the power steering fluid with the ATF not create problems in the long run?

i know it's called ATF for a reason, but why do most boards recommend using it as power steering fluid?

what brand of power steering fluid do you guys use in your rollas?

PS fluid =|= ATF.

Some manufacturer use ATF in the PS, but I've never heard of it the other way around. Ever.

Some manufacturers spec some very different stuff for the PS. Toyota just happens to spec Dexron III for its PS systems.

Don't mean to dredge up an older post, but is this correct? Does Toyota spec Dextron III ATF for the Power steering fluid? Just curious....I'm getting ready to replace the high pressure hose (leaking at the metal splice in the middle) and just happen to have some Dextron III.

Edit: I just found another post that seems to confirm that Dextron III is listed in the owner's manual. Unfortunately my used 98 didn't come with an owner's manual and I'm waiting on the Service Manuals that I ordered.

well it depends on how you look at it

Transmission fluid is hydraulic fluid,
Power Steering fluid is also a hydraulic fluid

so transmission fluid is equal to power steering fluid (in the eyes of Ford).

I agree with BigTDogg (MA).

Do NOT put Power Steering Fluid in the Transmission

i am using the Castrol Multi-Vehicle ATF for domestic vehicle for my PS fluid as it is Dexron III compliant. it is reddish in color compared to the old PS fluid which is yellow-brown in color.

Use Dexron III ATF for your power steering, it is what Toyota says to use.
