bad news about the rebuild

i managed to drill the stuck head bolt out after i talked with my machinist, but i found out some bad news from him.

he said that there is a good chance that the bottom end alignment is messed up from the knocking and the cost to re-machine everything back to spec would be too high and suggest me to buy a used motor.

i have found a 07 motor with 24k for $1000. if i remembered correctly both 8th gen and 9th gen uses 1zz-fe right? so 00 to 08 motor will fit my car? i just want to make sure this before i buy that motor.

thanks in advance, and thanks to those who have guided me through the rebuild project, but i think i'm going to just end it with a used motor.

EVAP system, wiring + ECM are different, different intake and exhaust manifold revised, additional sensors and capabilities for the new ECM (32bit design). The intake manifold is a composite piece on the 2003+ Corollas, they are also tuned differently and the gearbox ratios have changed to fit the new power band - now pumping out more mid-range power. The 2000-2002 Corollas with the 1ZZ-FE VVTi has tubular intake manifold and tuned more for low-end power - geared to take advantage of that.

Physcially, the engine will fit - but the wiring is pretty close to being a nightmare to hook up. Biggest change is the ECM, which will require you to rewire the trunk wiring and potentially knocking out some of the existing cars systems. Be less of a headache to get a 2000-2002 engine - but 2003+ engines in an 8th gen Corolla have been done - I would worry about CELs since the the ECM is expecting to talk to engine and non-engine related parts that are not there in your car.

i'm reusing my manifolds, mounts, and current wiring (my car has VVTi)

i'm thinking about just swapping the long block

and is the price tag a bit too high? or it's a good deal?

OK, I see. Just the block should be fine. I'm not sure what your ECM will think of the new heads.

The ones that swapped in a 9th gen engine to 8th gen body, moved the whole drivetrain over. The VVti between the two generations are similar design, but have a different ECM tune. The 9th gen heads may not be compatible with the 8th gen ECM - you can always try it and see.

Should be able to find one less than a grand. For that much, you probably get buy a part out 8th gen Corolla. There are couple of good 1ZZ-FE from a 2001-2002 Corollas on the West Coast going for $350-$550. 2005+ Corolla probably won't work for you, if you plan on keep the original wiring and ECM - since they went to a DBW throttlebody setup instead of the cable version.

Good advice fishy!

If you're gonna swap the whole drivetrain might as well put in a 2zz (half-joking )

i really don't have that kinda of money right now and although its a 3-spd, the tranny is in pretty good shape and since i'm doing this myself, i don't want this to get too complicated

i went to that store, the 07 motor is gone already. now i got a quote on a 05 motor with 75k for $850

now i'm checking local junkyards

pull-a-part here doesn't have any 8th gen or above corollas

Sucks that the pick-and-pull place doesn't have any 8th gen or newer. I haven't been to ones in my state for a while, but then it was the same way - no 8th gen or newer.

You can see if there are any 3th gen MR2 (MK-III - ran from 2000-2005, 1ZZ-FE powered) or any 7th gen Celica GT (2000-2005, 1ZZ-FE powered). If you are just after the block, then those would also work. Heads are definitely different between these and the 1ZZ-FE in the Corolla (intake and exhaust valves are different sizes between the Celica/MR2 and the Corolla). Also rods are a different material - but should be the same bore and stroke as the one in the Corolla.

local self pulls don't have any engines that i can use

the cheapest one i found is that $850 with 75k that engine is already pulled, guess that's why it's expensive. they say it ran in good condition before they pulled it and it has a 91 day warranty.

rest of the auto salvage in town are quoting me $1000+ for 03 engines with over 100k

1zz seems to be kinda expensive here in memphis tennessee. all the salvage yard i checked with are quoting me around $1000 for a pulled engine. one guy even quoted me 1300 for a 9th gen engine and 1500 for a 07 engine with 10 to 15k.

so i went back to the place my machinist suggest me (he buys engine from there all the time when toyota dealer send him cars) and took the 05 engine. the engine seem to be in good condition. the toyota oil filter is still on there, from the oil left on the dipstick the color is pretty clean and under the cap is pretty clean too. if all else fails i have 6 months warranty on the engine

i'm pretty much done swapping the parts.

this is for people who might be in similar situation in the future

the only thing i noticed is that the knock sensor is different

but after i took the bolt for the sensor on the 05 block my old one fitted straight in. i was gonna use the 05 sensor, but our sensor is grounded to the block and the 05 has a grounding wire coming out and the connector is different.

both water pumps has 4 longer bolts and 2 shorter bolts. the short bolts in the 00 engine is a bit longer than the short bolts in the 05 engine, everything else fits. yes, the water pump fits too, just need to change the bolts.

the thermostat cover is plastic from 05, but it can be interchanged. i'll swap in the manifold and mounts tomorrow after i get my hoist. this should work out nicely, i read somewhere online that a guy swapped in a 06 motor into his 00 (swap manifolds direct fit).

i'll keep this updated if you guys are interested

the coolant temperature sensor is different too, but i was able to swap them and make it work.

other than those two sensors and brackets it's a pretty easy fit.

topped the coolant with toyota long life, add some mobil 1 5w-30, and fired that baby up today.

everything seem to be running great expect that it sounds like i have a cheap fart can muffler... gonna get the exhaust leak checked out after dinner

fixed the exhaust leak. turned out that i forgot to torque down the spring bolts holding the manifold to the exhaust pipe.

took a test drive with the new engine. everything is perfect. now the car purrs like a cat.

05 engine in a 00, another 8th gen is back on the road!

thanks for all the help guys!
