VE = Value Edition (discontinued in 2001)
CE = Classic Edition
S = Sport (added in 2001)
LE = Luxury Edition
they are just trim levels. all 8th gen came with the 1zz-fe motor, only VE is paired with 3 spd auto, CE, S, and LE are paired with 4 spd auto. of course 5spd manual is available to all of them.
it mostly stands for interior features. the higher the trim level the more stuff you can add in your car, ie. sun roof, power window, power door, fold down seats, etc.
The S and LE are high trim models, the CE and VE have basic trims. The S has a sport cloth pattern and red guages, the LE has green gauges and alloys. Unless Im wrong I dont believe the S were available with auto, only man, and the LE was auto although there are a few rare ones with man, so rare I couldnt find one when buying mine.
You can get a S with auto, there may not be too many of S and LE out there. Majority of the Corollas sold were in the VE and CE trim level. I just picked up my LE last week, and there were tons of CE's out there. My LE didn't come with alloys, it's a 98. I think they may have added the alloys later to the LE package later.
There are a few gems out there with leather and moonroof as well, of course you pay a premium price for those subject to condition of course.

Ok, the S with auto must be rare like the LE with man as I never found them at dealers when I bought mine. True the leather and sunroof are rare, I hardly ever see one with a sunroof and I have never seen one with leather in the 9yrs Ive driven mine. The LE came with the securikey alarm system, the S may have had the option as well.
oh i see,so your saying that the motor in the corolla S and the motor the Corolla CE are the same its just the trim?i always thought the S had a different motor...

some do, some don't.
It was a dealer installed option.
Alloy wheels were a factory extra option.

That would be a CE with the C package, pretty much a LE without the LE badge, moonroof and alloys.
Any LE with moonroof and alloys is a B package, and same with S. S also comes with sporty body kit and fogs.

yeah true,i want a moon roof haha,but i like the CE and LE trim better than the S trim and the way it sits...i most definitely like the 8th gen corolla's the best out of them all...even the newer generations of CE look funky,but that's just my opinion.
are you sure about the alloys? I bought an '01 LE used and it came with steelies and oem hubcaps
this is correct, I have a friend with an auto S
mine didn't either; and it's an '01

I said that about alloys and securikey because thats how LE's came at the dealers I shopped at. The ones that had hubs were CE and some S corollas. The alloys they used were the silver teardrops that were mostly used with southern dealers, not the polished alloys in package B advertised in the brochures. Ive only seen one corolla with those wheels and a sunroof together so not many people went that route likely. Same with the S in man and LE in auto since thats the only way the dealers had them and they didnt want to bother with finding some that were made otherwise so they told me those were the only options to save them the hassle, which I found out later on that they were available but by special order in their cases. I wanted a LE man but settled for the auto, and I actually like the auto now although I know its a little slower than the man.
I believe my wife's car has a 3 speed and is a CE. It has D, 2, 1 on the shifter.
If there isn't an O/D (overdrive button on the shifter) - then it is probably a 3-speed.
Trims levels and their installed equipment also depends on which region their were sold in and if the car was intended for sales in the US or Canada. I myself got the 2002 Corolla S with the 4-speed auto - when I went to test drive the car - the dealership had probably 200 Corollas, about half were S trims, only two of those were with the 5-speed. All the LE trims were auto, about half of the CE trims were with a 5-speed. I could have ordered the car exactly the way I wanted, but it would take an additional 3 months before they could even start working on it. Not worth it for a commuting car, for me.
