AE111 rear disc brake conversion importer?

I've searched the forum here and read the threads pertaining to converting the rear drum brakes to disc brakes. I've also found some articles at trdforum.com.

Converting a Celica or Matrix 5-lug rotor to the Corolla 4x100 lug pattern seems needlessly complicated. From what I've been able to gather, it should be "simple" to import the rear disc brakes for an AE111 from outside the USA to do the conversion. (This also should be further made easier by the existence of aftermarket suppliers. However, it's not currently as simple as buying an AE111 rear disc brake conversion kit off of eBay Motors.)

I've also found some speculation that it should be possible to take the rear disc brake from an MR2 Spyder (which uses the same 4x100 lug pattern), but no one has written a HOWTO or confirmed this, as far as I've been able to find. If anyone has more information about that, please reply. (Presuming then that a wrecked MR2 Spyder can be found to harvest from.)

Assuming for now that the straightforward solution is to import an AE111 rear disc brake components to constitute a conversion kit:

1.) Where can such an importer be found?

2.) What precisely is the itemized list of required components? Calipers, pads, rotors, brake lines. Oh, and the proportioning valve from a Celica? Anything else?

3.) Is this something I have to do as a project? Or is it simple enough that I could provide the parts to a competent mechanic and pay for only an hour or two of labor?

Contact Phoenix Tuning (of Savannah GA).

Last time I checked they sold rear disc conversion kits for the 8th gen.

The Phoenix Tuning Website doesn't list it, so a PM or phone call would be in order.

Also check out vamp's website for pictures of the swap and materials list:

Thanks for the help so far!

However, as I said, I've read what I think is rather thorough of the existing threads here. I'm not interested (unless there's no other way) in using the Dr. Tweak (Phoenix Tuning) conversion that Vamp used -- redrilling a 5-lug Celica rotor (hub?) to fit the 4x100 lug of this model Corolla.

Mostly I'm asking for help either finding an importer for a AE111 rear disc "kit", or more information on what domestically might be available that will just bolt-on (such as perhaps the MR2 Spyder's rear disc brakes).

Here's a post from TRDforums that most closely matches what I want to know (except that it's over a year out of date):

EDIT 03.19.08
MemoryFab have decided not to distribute these rear discs as no company in Japan are willing to sell these to us at wholesale pricing. The replacement rear disc rotors still can be purchase through them however at about $200 for blanks and $240 for slotted. Price depends on current economy/exchange rates.

Other sources for replacement rear discs:

1) Japan Parts - selling OEM Toyota rear discs (Toyota OEM p/n 42431-12150)
http://www.japanparts.com/db/partsli...key=kjjunawc01

2) Fensport UK - selling Black Diamond rear discs in plane, slotted, and cross drilled (they also sell replacement ebrake cables, tho I believe AE92GTS can be used)
http://www.fensport.co.uk/partsfiles/ae111brakes.htm

REAR DISC SETUP IMPORTERS-
note:These companies/importers are not affiliated with me or memoryfab.com. Most of the time they wont have it listed on their sites but you may contact them asking if they have or if they can help you get a "rear disc conversion/setup from a AE101/111 Corolla/Levin/Trueno (model years 1992-2000)" Please do your research and make sure you know exactly what you're buying. The conversion kit should include 1) hub+carrier 2) brake calipers 3)brake discs (optional, new ones are sold here) 4)UNCUT hydralic brake lines 5)UNCUT parking brake cables. These kits should cost no more than $300.. they are sometimes seen on ebay going for as low as $150.

**Please help me update this list if anyone finds other sources or if any of the above turns out to be invalid.
Except that this list doesn't mention the proportioning valve, and none of those sites list the rear disc brake parts described. and as I said, I don't see any such kit available on eBay Motors currently.

(JspeX, if you're still active on this message board, perhaps you can throw in your input on this.)

You can use the brake proportioning valve from a 1990 Corolla GT-S coupe (that came equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes).

As for actually locating a complete rear disc conversion off a JDM AE111..... you're on your own. Those things are super hard to come by these days. Expect to pay a pretty penny if you can find a set. Try contacting the importers that were listed in that post. Don't really know what other advice I can offer you.

Thanks again for the quick reply.

So it's now so rare (a year later) that $150-300 is almost certainly out of the question?

The last set I saw selling on eBay (well over a year ago) sold for $375, and that was without shipping charges.

Add the cost of getting new pads, rotors and brake lines and you're looking at a cost of at least $500.

Roughly the same price that you would pay for a full kit from Phoenix Tuning. So take your pick.

I don't know if you looked at the link I posted to Vamp's site, but reading that he says he is using the JDM AE101 brakes not the phoenix kit. I just meant any rear discs by "the swap" . I posted it because it has a picture and list of all the parts used

As for actually finding the part, I think finding a local or semi-local speed shop specializing in japanese cars (even hondas), and calling them to see if they can source it through their usual jdm sources might work. I have looked on the web a bit and come up empty so far, but I did find a speed shop (without a website) that had a 1973 corolla race car in the place with mugened out civic so I'm thinking of asking them.

And what about ae92 rear discs?

Chris

The places I have seen ship whole cars or 20ft containers full of parts
They have some nice corollas though:

Then if no one sells a kit, does anyone have a list of parts and part numbers required to do the conversion?

Did you not read the thread?

My first response just mentioned that Phoenix Tuning sold a rear disc conversion kit for the 8th gen.

I contacted Dr. Tweak a couple months ago and he said he no longer sells the kit. Unless he started selling it again.

hmmm... that's unfortunate. I guess that's common with most Corolla parts, there's just not strong enough demand for performance upgrades.
