What a terrifying Morning

Hey Guys,

First post here. I have a 98 corolla LE. I had seen from HummerH20 on how to make a custom CAI and decided to make my own.

So last night my friend and I had a problem getting the CAI to work with the pieces Hummer said to use. For some reason the 2" pvc was too loose for the spectre pieces. So after a little improvisation, i got it to fit.

After a quick test run I realized the car was sputtering a bit on idle and during low rpm acceleration. I of course attributed this to my makeshift CAI. So I decided to wait until morning to turn my CAI into and SRI. However after I put in the SRI, the car seemed to sputter worse.

Then I decided to go back to stock, then the car would still sputter while idling then sputter then die when put into gear.

Eventually the car would not even start. Needless to say, I was freaked out, since this is actually my parents car. lol

However after cleaning the Airflow sensor, PCV valve and checking the spark plugs, things went back to normal.

Just a very very weird coincidence I guess.

Anyone else have problems like this when installing either a SRI or CAI?

you didnt have it connected right on the throttle body more likely. Or the MAF sensor was unplugged.

check to make sure the IAT sensor was hooked up right. 98, 99s dont have mass airflows... they have Intake Air Temperature and Manifold Absolute Pressure sensors.
i'm dissapointed JDM that you didn't catch that... tsk tsk...
naw i'm jus' playin' but seriously OP check the IAT and your vacuum lines
when i put mine on i forgot the charcoal canister vent line... took me a day or 2 to figure out why i could only fill my tank a gallon or so at a time...
if you need help i can take pics and post jus lemme know

Well, I am positive that I had all the vacuum cables and sensors hooked in correctly. It seems that after the PCV valve and sensors were cleaned, things went back to normal.

What I found odd, was that the car sputtered at idle and was fine during acceleration. However, when put into gear it did sputter and die.

So, Things are working great right now with the SRI. I am just a little leery to try to the CAI.

Since I had a problem using the 1ft PVC that Hummer suggested, wouldn't the accordion pipe from Spectre be a good alternative?

that DIY is a little old... i had to buy another extension for the intake because it was too short and kept coming loose at the clamps, also for the pvc piping you have to put a ring around it before connecting it to the filter, i dont know where the ring came from im sure its a spectre part but thats what i used. i though drive a 99 corolla VE and i dont think i have a MAF sensor.

BTW corolla without CAI useless.... took mine out yesterday because i sold it and accelerating takes for evrrrrr.
No, not blaming you at all. I was just saying that it did not work out to well for me. However, I have definitely noticed the difference with even the SRI. I am still thinking about doing the CAI as well.

Anyone do both and have an opinion on both?
