programming remote keyless entry - prizm lsi

Trying to do this without going to the dealer.........

I just bought a 2001 prizm lsi which supposedly has standard remote keyless entry, although the owner had no remotes to give me, so I got one on ebay. In order to validate that it has rke, I found these programming steps (jump ahead to after step 14 if you don't feel like reading this part)
--------------------------------------------

1. Driver’s door open, key removed from ignition switch.

2. Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch.

3. Within 40 seconds push the door lock switch, located in driver's door, from lock to unlock 5 times, at 1 second intervals.

4. Close and open drivers door.

5. Within 40 seconds push the door lock switch located in driver’s door from lock to unlock 5 times, at 1 second intervals.

6. Insert key into the ignition switch.

7. Switch ignition on and off once to program a transmitter code while retaining the original codes or twice to program a remote transmitter code while erasing the original codes. Three times to check how many remote transmitters are currently registered.

8. Remove key from ignition switch:

9. System should now lock and unlock vehicle. Once or twice depending on which mode has been selected. One to four times, slowly, to indicate number of remote transmitters registered.

10. Press lock or unlock button on remote transmitter, for 2 seconds.

11. System should now lock and unlock vehicle.

12. Close and open driver's door.

13. Press lock or unlock button on remote transmitter, for 2 seconds.

14. System should now lock and unlock vehicle. Once to confirm registration, twice to indicate registration has failed.
---------------------
On step 9, I get no response from the car when it is supposed to lock/unlock the doors. Are these the right steps for programming the remote?

I read where someone said that you have to press a button on the ECM, but can find no further information on that idea, nor any steps to get at the ECM other than "remove the center console completely and you will find the ECM". Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

I programmed two remotes on a '99 Prizm LSI back in January. The steps look correct. I'll double check for you when I get back home. What are the numbers on the back of the remote that you got from ebay?

OK Here's the complete procedure directly from the 1999 Prizm GM factory service manual:

1) Set the following conditions:
a) Ignition off and ignition key out of cylinder
b) All doors closed except driver's door
c) All doors unlocked.

2) Insert ingition key into key cylinder momentarily and remove it.

3) Using the switch on the driver's door, move the switch to LOCK-UNLOCK 5 times at approximately 1 second intervals within 40 seconds.

4) Close driver's door, then open it.

5) Again, move the switch to LOCK-UNLOCK 5 times at approximately 1 second intervals within 40 seconds.

6) Insert ignition key into key cylinder.

7) Turn the ignition switch from ON-LOCK at approximately 1 second intervals, for one to three times, depending on the desired mode,
a) 1 time for add mode
b) 2 times for rewrite mode
c) 3 times for confirmation mode

8) Remove the ignition key from the key cylinder.
a) If the add or rewrite mode has been selected, the doors will lock/unlock once or twice at one second intervals, once for add mode or twice for rewrite mode.
b) If the confirmation mode is selected, the doors will lock/unlock 0 to 4 times at two second intervals to inform the technician of the number of transmitters programmed.

9) Press a transmitter button for two seconds. The doors will lock/unlock once at a one second interval to inform the technician that the signal has been received from the transmitter.

10) Close driver's door, then open it.

11) Press a transmitter button for two seconds. The doors will lock/unlock once at a one second interval to inform the technician that the signal has been received from the transmitter.
a) If the doors lock/unlock once, the transmitter programming has been completed. Go to step 9 to continue programming additional transmitters.
b) If the doors lock/unlock twice, the transmitter programming is not complete. Go to step 9 to begin transmitter programming again.

If any of the following conditions occur during programming, the remote control door lock receiver will return to normal operation:
a) The drivers door remains closed
b) 20 seconds elapses with no input to the RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) module.
c) The ignition key is inserted into the key cylinder
d) Four transmitters have been programmed at once.

You do not have to press any button on the ECM.

The FCC ID on the transmitter should be HYQ1512S for 1998 to 2002 Prizms.

I hope this helps.
