Trying to do this without going to the dealer.........
I just bought a 2001 prizm lsi which supposedly has standard remote keyless entry, although the owner had no remotes to give me, so I got one on ebay. In order to validate that it has rke, I found these programming steps (jump ahead to after step 14 if you don't feel like reading this part)
--------------------------------------------
1. Driver’s door open, key removed from ignition switch.
2. Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch.
3. Within 40 seconds push the door lock switch, located in driver's door, from lock to unlock 5 times, at 1 second intervals.
4. Close and open drivers door.
5. Within 40 seconds push the door lock switch located in driver’s door from lock to unlock 5 times, at 1 second intervals.
6. Insert key into the ignition switch.
7. Switch ignition on and off once to program a transmitter code while retaining the original codes or twice to program a remote transmitter code while erasing the original codes. Three times to check how many remote transmitters are currently registered.
8. Remove key from ignition switch:
9. System should now lock and unlock vehicle. Once or twice depending on which mode has been selected. One to four times, slowly, to indicate number of remote transmitters registered.
10. Press lock or unlock button on remote transmitter, for 2 seconds.
11. System should now lock and unlock vehicle.
12. Close and open driver's door.
13. Press lock or unlock button on remote transmitter, for 2 seconds.
14. System should now lock and unlock vehicle. Once to confirm registration, twice to indicate registration has failed.

On step 9, I get no response from the car when it is supposed to lock/unlock the doors. Are these the right steps for programming the remote?
I read where someone said that you have to press a button on the ECM, but can find no further information on that idea, nor any steps to get at the ECM other than "remove the center console completely and you will find the ECM". Any advice is appreciated. Thanks
