oil + coolant mixing

My girlfriend currently owns a 02 corolla ce with the 1zze
she had a good amount of oil leakage around the timing chain cover.
I know a good amount about cars but this is a first on an 02 rolla
so i figured it is just the sealant around the cover, so ill pull it reseal it and put it back together.
Well i did all that i used black rtv, and followed the sealant procedure to a T.
I noticed that oil runs pretty heavily through the cover but there is also coolant that runs in there by the water pump.
My question is did i not seal the cover correctly is there a gasket that i have to buy if so where does it go?

Im stumped and the gf isnt very happy considering she cannot drive it

any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Did you scrape all that old stuff off first? Made sure that there was no trace of oil or residue on the sealing surfaces? No gasket there - if we are talking about the same thing, just seal packing material.
Both the water pump and timing cover are sealed with that adhesive. Toyota part number is - Seal packing 08826-00100.

Did you draw two separate beads between the water pump and timing chain? Possible that there is too little or too much sealant there, making for a poor seal. Once you get coolant and oil mixed together - tough to get out. Need a couple of flushes to get that stuff off. Might need to pull the oil pan and scrape the gel out.

did scrap all old stuff off, used permatex black RTV not toyota sealant. used Haynes manual and followed sealant procedure even where the location of sealant beads should be including the water pump and chain area. Difficult to know how much to use I believe the book said 2mm. How would you know enough is enough? Someone suggested create-a-gasket, would that create a better seal? Thanks for the sealant part number, would you possibly know how much it would cost?

thanks
dj

I think I paid about $13 or $15 for it - don't remember for sure off the top of my head. The Permatex stuff is pretty good (assuming you are using the Permatex Ultra Black Gasket Maker stuff (almost exactly like the Toyota stuff) - I don't think it is a sealant issue as long as you followed the directions on the "tube", not Haynes.

Haynes manual instructions look just like the ones in the Factory Service Manual - as long as you followed that for the bead placement and let the RTV set as described on the tube, should be OK.

Really difficult to gauge how much is correct to use - bead width is one measure, but takes a little more than that. As long the sealant material didn't all squeeze out - should be OK. Some sealant would squeeze out - but not so mcu that it will drip off the mating surfaces. The Toyota FIPG (Form In Place Gasket) sealant is almost like a create-a-gasket. Has a particular "tack" time, that should be followed. General RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanization) needs a little bit of heat and moisture (has to "breathe") to fully cure - hoping that you didn't get a tube of Permatex Black RTV, a general purpose RTV sealant - completely different than Permatex Ultra Black Gasket Maker sealant.

Also, did you double check the cover for warping? Possible that is what caused the initial leak. On this engine (1ZZ-FE with VVTi) - most leaks start around the timing chain tension on the back of the head (closest to firewall).

pull the motor because of a leaking timing chain cover?

a bit overreacting isn't it?

have u tried to reseal it again? sometimes it might be just bad luck, or missed or spot somewhere without noticing
