2000 Corolla

Hello

The driver side window does not work, and I would get it fixed, but I have a tight budget.

#1 Is this something I can do? I'm a novice. I don't know jack about changing a window. I can do the basics like rotate and change tires, oil, filter, etc. . . .

#2 If it isn't that hard, how do I start by taking off the door panel? I tried, but noticed that one of the fastners snapped off. So I didn't want to take it any further than that.

Btw, all the other windows seem to work and they are auto windows. The passanger is a little slow, but I'm not worried about that yet. I read somewhere that something might be dirty? I'm assuming it's the motor, because of the others working.

Anyway, if anyone can help, that would be awesome.

Thanks.

Window doesn't work as in - doesn't even move or it moves, but gets stuck?

Could be anything from a broken regulator to a burned up motor to a faulty switch to damaged wirind to the motor or switch.

First thing to do is pull the door panel off so you can take a look. If you have a broken fastener - it happens - just order more (dealership, bodyshop, or salvage yard).

Is it a DIY job? I'd say it is within the realm of your average DIYer. You have to pop the switch (driver's side control panel), remove door handle, and armrest before you pop the panel off - otherwise, it won't come loose. Of course, anytime your working around wiring - disconnect the battery before you strat monkeying around in there. Even with the battery, most of the wiring will not be energize, but you still want to disconnect the battery and a safety precaution.

But if you are having a hard time taking off the door panel, then I would just stop there and have someone else do it. The job is not hard, but you will need to get at the door and possibly do some rewiring and simple diagnsotic work. If this is not to you liking, a good shop would be able to do it for you.

Sometimes paying a bit more will pay off at the end, definitely cheaper than having to bring it in to fix something that broke in your attempt to fix it.
