Could you describe the ticking noise in more detail? When does it happen or when it is more noticeable? At idle, at speed, WOT, etc.?

Do a search online - the 1ZZ-FE is a relatively noisy engine. Even when running normally, it makes a good amount of noise at idle - soft of a ticking, clacking, metallic noise.

You also have VSV valves under the hood that make a clicking, ticking noise when they are operating normally.

A knocking noise that seems to vary with engine speed is another matter - that could be anything from piston slap to a rod knock. Can't really say what you might be looking at, since we need more information.

What maintenance have you do so far on the car. i.e. changed plugs recently?

What model year Corolla are we talking about - what does the odometer say, how many kilometers so far?

From your description - could be a number of things, from normal operation to just needed a good cleaning, to possibly needed a valve adjustment and or early signs of detonation (engine ticks loudly when you load it, like driving up a hill).

Chances are you just need a good cleaning of the engine - need to clean the throttle body, clean the IAT/MAF sensor (2000+ Corollas only), check sparkplugs for wear, replace sparkplug wires (1998-1999 only), cheak and replace the PCV valve as necessary, and/or decarbonized the combustion chambers (professional cleaning is the best, but many have used Seafoam or similar to clean the engine).

Try a tank of higher octane to see how the car runs - if it runs better, especially when running up a hill, then you probably have heavy carbon deposits inside the combustion chambers.

try what fish said in the last post.

still need more description to find your problem. since none of us can go check on the car personally, ur description will directly affect the accuracy of the diagnosis.

what does the noise sound like? are the ticking at idle and ticking while driving up a hill the same sound?

can you locate where the noise comes from? and a sound clip of the noise would make things a lot easier.

Canada ticking noise

I have 164 K and its 2002.. I have recently changed the spark plugs... and combustion chamber was cleaned about 30K back or so nothing else has been done inside the engine besides that.. Would u say i should take it to the dealership and get all that cleaning done.?

Most of the cleaning, you can do yourself - tons of information floating online for those tasks.

Valve clearance check is for people who are not afraid of popping the top of the engine off (technically - just pulling the valvecover off). Need a long wrench to turn the engine over by hand (bolt on the crank) and a set of feeler gauges to measure valve clearance. Most dealerships go by an audible check - unless the engine is ticking abnormally loudly - they don't even check the clearances.

Not sure what you mean the combustion chambers got cleaned - Who cleaned them? How did they go about cleaning them? Still could be a number of things - I'd say get a comprehensive tune up (sans sparkplugs, since you already replaced them). Check for vacuum leaks, clean the throttlebody, clean the MAf sensor, run a can of fuel injector cleaning in the tank - even try higher octane for a tank to see if the ticking goes away.
