Pretty broad question. Depends on what model year Corolla and Civic you are looking at and their equipment levels are?
But spec'd out very similarly - the two would get almost the same fuel economy, If you looked over the whole series of those models (all trim levels over many years) - I would have to say that Toyota would have slightly better fuel economy (I was a former Honda guy too).
When I bought my 2002 Corolla S - I was comparing it directly to a Honda Civic LX. Spec'd out almost the same and ran almost the same price (Honda was slightly higher). The Corolla was rated 30-32 city/39-41 highway and the Civic was rated a 30-33 city/38-39 highway.
