Pretty broad question. Depends on what model year Corolla and Civic you are looking at and their equipment levels are?

But spec'd out very similarly - the two would get almost the same fuel economy, If you looked over the whole series of those models (all trim levels over many years) - I would have to say that Toyota would have slightly better fuel economy (I was a former Honda guy too).

When I bought my 2002 Corolla S - I was comparing it directly to a Honda Civic LX. Spec'd out almost the same and ran almost the same price (Honda was slightly higher). The Corolla was rated 30-32 city/39-41 highway and the Civic was rated a 30-33 city/38-39 highway.

check out fueleconomy.org. Ignore the manufacturer ratings and just look at user reported mpg. Make sure you choose automatic or manual correctly when selecting a car. I did this some months ago and felt like it was more or less a tie but the corolla was slightly better, and the civics can have more transmission issues than corollas, so I got an '04 corolla and an '01 prizm.

I sense an overwhelming inherent bias coming....
