Rock Damage

My daughter ran over a large rock on the highway in her 2000 Corolla automatic. I found she had smashed and punctured the transmission pan.

I ordered the pan and the gasket from the dealer and today when I removed the pan for replacement, I found another part, inside the pan was also smashed. It's too late to call the parts desk so looking for a little info here.

The part looks like a small reservoir, about 1/2" thick (was) and maybe 6 inches by 4 inches. Mounts with 3 bolts. What is this piece and any idea on cost?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Does it look a little like this:

That's a filter/screen for a 4 speed. Since you never used the gasket yet you might be able to return the gasket and get a kit with the gasket and screen. Or buy just the screen. Cost should be around $20.

Marty & Gil...That's it. Thanks. Appreciate the info. Glad it's not anything expensive.

Must have been some rock!

Once you pull the transaxle filter off - take a quick peek at the underlying valvebody for damaged/crushed sections, chunks of metal broken off, or cracks - valvebody is pretty expensive, but less expensive that a whole new transaxle. Hopefully, the damage was just isolated to the pan and filter.

Yeah, leave it to my daughter to run right over it!

I pulled the screen/filter off and the underlying aluminum body looks great. I feel lucky as the screen (what the parts dealer called it - $38) was completelyl flat and mashed/wrapped around a bolt on the valve body which made it a little difficult to pull off once I removed the 3 bolts.

When I pick up the new filter and install, I will double check the body for cracks or other damage again. Hopefully all works well when I put it back together.

Thanks for your reply.
