USA Aftermarket cruise control

I just installed my cruise control system that I buoght from the cruise control store on line. The job turned out to be more complex than I figured it to be. I was hoping that the accompanying instructions would help it me with the task but I was wrong. It only made things worse. The manuel told me the ECM was under the steering column, Chiltons said the ECM was under the dash, I found it with the help of Toyotnation under the the center console. I was able to do the whole job in one and a half days. I didn't connect the tach wire because I don't have a tach. So I was wondering, Is that an important part of the system? It's been working great so far with no problems so I'm a little unsure what the tach wire is for?

Since a tach instrument panel can be dropped in a non-tach dash there is a connection there already. I forget what color wire it is though. In fact I connected most of the cruise from the instrument panel wires. Search for my posts about installing an Audiovox cruise control.

I think the reason there is a tach connection is so you don't accidentally rev too high while it is turned on. Imagine cruising along and the thing screws up and thinks you are pressing the accelerate button. You'd keep picking up speed. With the tach wire hooked up it'll shut off the cruise control so you could coast down. It's probably useful for manual transmissions also. Pop the clutch in while in cruise and it's rev up.
