Replace bars with pistons for trunk?

Although I admit the trunk works well, I want to put a free-air subwoofer or two on the back deck, so...the bars that open the trunk and allow it to sit up at rest get in the way. I wonder if I could retro-fit some pistons instead? Has anybody done this?

thanks,

The hood struts are too bad of an install - just use the existing hinges and add a stut. For the trunk - to replace the OEM goosenecks or j-bars, with a low profile bar and strut variant - have to pull one off a donor car.

I was thinking one off a Mazda or similar - like this:

Haven't run across any aftermarket ones. Might find something of use here - http://www.thehoffmangroup.com - lots of links to custom switches and accessories. More for hotrods, but could be useful to some. Other potential donors as well - just haven't run across any decent DIY to point you toward.
