REtrieving codes without scanner

Hi, is there a way to retrieve error codes without using a scanner? In my old Camero you code by placing a jumper between 2 oins on the diag link. I noticed somewhere else they mention doing the same thing to a 200X Camry. So is it possible to do on a 1999 Corolla ( Actually its a Chevy Prism ) Thank Tim

You could jump some terminals to get airbag and ABS codes, but not powertrain codes.

Thanks for the replies.

On my Nissan Sentra there is a procedure to get the codes out. Its kind of crazy but you can get the Ck Engine light to flash the codes. I thought that maybe Toyota would have a similar procedure.
