hey guys im pretty new to cars but i have a '98 with 238k miles on it so i figured this is the perfect car to work on. as of right now im doing an interior color change from a tan-beige to black and ive run into some problems
first the ac controls and shifter bulbs are all burnt out and idk what size bulb it uses. i went to a local store and the ended up givin me 24's which were too big. im thinkin 74's?
also i cant get the panel that surrounds the radio clock vents etc off because idk how to get the lighter out.
finally i already painted one door panel to black but didnt realize the bottom half of the door is not viynl. should i use a paint for plastic? and is it neccessary to remove the black paint i already put on?
any help or recommendations on how to further enahnce the interior would be great. Thanks in advance
ok first off panel. to get the lighter part out, you literally pull that panel off. take out the ash tray, and pull it out, you might have to use a bit of force, but it's really only clips that are holding them on.
to get to the AC bulbs, you have to first disconnect the negative cable to the battery (the airbag parts arent too far away, and a 300mph bag to the face would ruin anyone's day) pull off the trim panel there, unscrew the pocket box, (4 screws) then unscrew the AC panel. now, the tricky thing is, getting that AC panel off. i've found that the bulb is right within grip if you bend the panel (after unscrewing) facing down, the panel itself will come off if you remove the cables underneath the AC panel (there are two of them) and the cables for the switches. oh, and dont make the mistake i made, be REALLY careful with those screws, they are a pain in the bum to find if you drop them, and i only got mine out with a seriously strong neodymium magnet attached to a length of wire. make SURE you have your hand under to catch them if they fall.
well i got my panel off but its just hanging by the lighter socket which wont come off. also i found the bulbs for the ac contols, at least i think i did. when i removed the ac control panel there was a twist socket in the two top corners with burnt out bulbs. i just dont know what size they are
o and yea i found that out hte hard way too. i dropped two screws down the console already
thanks man....im going to start painting today and hopefully it all turns out looking good. im going with a black and blue interior so any thoughts on painting the smaller parts blue, like the lock window crank and door handle?
I recommend you pick up a Haynes repair manual. it's about $20 from pepboys.
to paint the window handle, it'd be best to remove it, take a cloth, and put it behind the piece, and pull it forward gently with a jiggling motion. the lock will be a problem, cause I've never disassembled a door panel before, but I'm pretty positive that you're gonna have to do so in this case, hence the haynes. the other one, chilton's is a bit vague with parts, so i recommend the haynes.
well i have manual windows and doors and i already removed everything. i was just wondering if painting the door panel black and the other stuff blue would look good

Don't expect a response in two seconds. Nobody is getting paid for this.
Not to hijack the thread, but on a somewhat related note, is it possible to paint the dashboard without removing it? I really don't want to tear into that because sure as hell, I'll never get it back together properly.
^^^ Did that some time ago on a larger car (i.e., more room to work on), worst experience to date.
Overspray got everywhere in the car and the finish wasn't as even as I would have expected. Used one of those paint dye sprays, supposed to give you a more even coloring. Not sure how it would look with todays paints - but the overspray issue will still be there (assuming you'll be using a rattle can to paint with).
well i work as a camp counsler and our shirts are the perfect blue so i just cut up some old ones i had that i didnt wear and stuck them on but im sure you could find fabricat a local store
