99 Corolla Engine Problems

Something is wrong with my rolla! My alternator, my starter, my battery, my fuses i mean like everything is working just fine. It seems like power is not being circulated the right way. Whenever the car starts, the light inside comes on but when I swing the engine nothing happens. I was thinking maybe something below my car might be lose but I don't know what so I might have to carry it to the shop and run a computer to see what is the problem. Before doing that, I just want to know if anybody know what's going on with my rolla.

When I had that problem, it was a bad starter. Costed me around $400 to get it replaced at the dealer. It's been working fine ever since. Hopefully I won't ever get that replaced again before I sell the car.

So you turn the key to START, but the engine doesn't crank at all?
Do you get any noises (clicking noise, buzzing, etc.) when you turn it to START?
Have you tried jumping the car from another car - does that make the car start or same thing?
When did this happen, just all of the sudden, or over a period of time?

Could be a number of things causing this including:
- bad connection at the battery
- bad connection to the starter
- poor chassis grounds
- bad starter contacts
- bad starter
- weak or dying battery
- bad ignition switch
- general wiring problem
- bad ECM
- bad relays or fuses
- etc

Have to do a bit of diagnostic work to narrow that list down - if you can supply more information, maybe we can help narrow it down for you.

I turn on the key and the engine doesn't crank at all. The only noise that comes on is when I put in the key inside the ignition with the little beeping noise and that is all. When I swing to put on the car, nothing happens. Yes I have tried to jump my car and nothing happens at all. Yes, it happened all of the sudden. It was just a normal day and the rolla just didn't wanted to go. The fuses are good, the connection to the battery is good, my mechanic told me that my starter and alternator are good. He feels that something underneath my car might not be connected. I hope this kinda helps you. If there is anymore questions you want to know, you can ask me. Thanks for your time also man!

How did the mechanic verify that the starter and alternator were good - did he pull them off the car and tested them on the bench?

Aside from the beeping, if you crank the key to START and you don't hear, see, or feel anything (engine doesn't crank over, no clicks inside of outside of the car, etc.) then I would suspect an ignition switch issue. You can verify this with a multimeter (connect it to the battery) or just turn on the interior lights, maybe even the headlights while you attempt to start the car.

I like to connect a multimeter to the battery anyway, as you can test the battery at this point too. If the lights dim (battery drops in voltage) as you move the key to START - then that means the ignition switch is likely working, just power is not getting to the starter or starter relay. If the lights (battery voltage) doesn't even move - then you have an ignition switch issue.

Not sure why the mechanic is saying something "underneath" the car is not connected - IMO, find someone else to diagnose the car.

Since this was so sudden - could be as simple as a broken or disconnected wire. Could be anywhere from the source (battery), to the fuse boxes, various relays, intergration relay (power distribution box), switch (ignition), contacts (on the starter) and all the wiring running between them.

From your recent post - jumping the battery makes no difference, so you can rule out the battery. Nothing happening when you turn the key to start, makes me want to look at the ignition switch (assuming that there isn't a soft clicking noise or power drain as you turn the key).

Check this out. I got a clip.

There is a some weird clicking, electronic noise in the clips - but I think I could figure out what your were doing in the first clip. When you cranked it over - some of the indicator lamps went away, possible dimmed slightly (i.e., hard to tell, but some of the lamps looked like they took an extra second to come back on) - that makes it seem like the ignition switch is working OK. Only way to be 100% sure is to buzz it out. This indicates more of a battery problem. Since you have an aftermarket SRI - double check that the bracket attached to the intake and the intake itself, hasn't chewed up any of the wires leading to the battery.

In the last clip - should really put a battery hold down on the battery itself. If they jump around or rattle in the engine bay when your driving, you could run into a bad plate or damage the battery internally. Unless you just disconnected it to test it.

Need to take a multimeter/voltmeter to the battery and double check its voltage and check for connections issues. Check for ground loops (millivolt scale on the voltmeter - verify that the chassis grounds are not leaking any current, all at the same potential).

From the video - I'm still leaning to a electrical connection issue from the battery to the starter, possible bad start relay, possible bad battery.

Thanks a lot bro!!! I think you are right about the starter relay or maybe the connection from the battery to the starter. On Monday, I am going to get another mechanic to check it out and he specializes only in TOYOTA!!!
