I replaced the original engine because it was blowing blue, and the one i replaced it with blows blue even worse... well, this is a non vvti engine btw.
i have taken it all apart, taken the pistons out, im replacing the piston rings, rod bearings for a start. when i took off the air intake manifold, it seemed like there was oil in the pipes. I also noticed on each of the middle rings on each pistons the bottom(oil) side was charred and black, looks like lots of wear and is rough too. the ring is between the top and the oil ring.
the oil drainbacks on the head are clean and not plugged. Tthere is alot of "Blowback" out the oil filler cap, maybe too much due to dirty rings OR a blocked oil passage, i mean the pressure needs to go somewhere and that pcv valve is where it goes, which i find is pretty dumb, but where else would it go? this is emissions...im rebuilding the engine tomorrow, and will try to post pics or keep everyone updated, what are some recomendations?

well, i figured out some things, the pcv valve lets air pass through it from pressure in the crankcase, it seems like its blowing too much air and oil. This could be from too much oil(more than what should be in the engine), could be from the rings not doing their job because they are carboned up from being driven like grandma(not me) haha. I am going to clean the intake with either seafoam or intake cleaner, hopefully then it wont burn oil... answer this please: is this pcv valve and oil passing through it into the intake a normal thing that happens? just need to be cleaned every once ina while? If so, my problem is solved.
PCV valve allows the excess pressure built up inside the engine to ventilate to the intake manifold and the fumes are burnt off during combustion. if the valve is stuck open, the vacuum inside the intake manifold can suck the oil vapor out of the crankcase and burn them off.
take off the PCV valve and try to blow into it, it's a one way valve, means air can only pass in one direction. then shake it, you should hear a crisp rattle sound. it's normal. replace the valve if it fails the test. it's a relatively cheap part, but if you want to reuse it, clean it with carb cleaner and let it dry up completely before reinstalling it back.

the valve is perfectly fine, that was my first test was to blow into it-its a one way valve, it also rattles. the hose that leads from it to my intake has oil lined all inside it and i can run my finger in my intake manifold and have a small film of oil come off
the piston rings were so cluttered with old burnt oil and carbon and sludge, even the oil holes, i cleaned it all off and it left a pile of crap on my desk. i put the engine all back together and it runs good now, im cleaning out the chambers by putting ATF in each cylinder, now i just need to clean my intake with some sea foam or intake cleaner. what should i use for injector cleaner?

why not just replace the rings while you have the pistons out? i don't know about sitting old rings, but you need to hone the cylinders to sit the rings properly
as far as injector goes, lucus has some good stuffs. at least i've heard a lot of good stuffs about their quality.

the rings were fine, i cleaned em all up, measured, they are fine, it doesnt blow blue anymore either... and yea i would have to hone if i got new rings, eventually im going to sell this car and get an 03 corolla or newer instead.
Did you have to yank the engine, or were you able to pull out the pistons from the top?
I'm looking at having to do this myself soon.
no you do not have to pull the engine out, but you have to use a jack to lift the engine up an inch or two to remove the belt tensioner off the chain cover. The oil pan can be easily taken off without moving the engine. you will need a 12 point 12mm socket to undo piston rods. Let me know if you need help on anything.
