Broken Shifter Cable - 98 4spd auto

Hey folks, I have done a pile of searching and have been unable to find much on broken shift cables. It is a 98 1.8 auto 4 spd and the dealer wants a small fortune for this cable. The quote on the phone is well over $300(in Ontario).
Can anyone recommend a cheaper option? I truely cannot afford to fix the car at this price. Is there another car/model that shares the same cable that might be cheaper. Or, are there any aftermarket companies that may supply that same part?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I've been in your shoes. To avoid paying the Stealership what they wanted I ended up getting one from a pull your own junk yard for $40. It was a PITA to remove but after removing it myself i knew exactly how to put it back in. Other than a junk yard i couldn't find it reasonably priced anywhere else. And if you get one from a junker make sure its the right one. Only after almost finishing the install did i realize that the cable i had was a little short. Good luck.

Thanks

thank you for your information. I had the auto wrecker in mind, was hoping to get a new one just so I don't have to do it again in a few month or so. The sad part about that is that the local wreckers usually charge 50% of original cost on their parts .
I will look into it for sure, thanks again for your time.

I have one waiting to be sold. PM me your wrecker's quote and I'll match it.

Shifter Cable

We have come to a resolution for our problem. Thanks to all who replied, your responses have been very helpful.
As it turns out, embarassingly enough, the cable did not actually break, it simply came off the end of the shift linkage in the console. , I deserve the abuse

Thanks again to TN...
