4-sp Auto transmission fluid capacity?
I changed the transmission fluid on a 98 4-speed auto last weekend (pan off, filter screen replaced). I have so far put 3.2 quarts of fluid in it, but the level is only just above the cold high mark when hot. What is the capacity of this tranny? I read 3.3 quarts, but can hardly believe that since the new oil has adopted a slightly darker color indicating mixing with at least some residual fluid after I drained the old out.
To measure it I have driven for about 10 miles around town and then run the selector through the gears, left the engine running and checked the dipstick a few times. It is hard to read but I am pretty sure it is about 3/16 above the cold high mark.
I am not used to working on automatics so am a little unsure of the correct procedure. It shifts fine to me.
BTW, what is "slippage" in an automatic? Similar to a bad clutch?
Thanks!
