How much does it cost to get the windshield replaced?

there's a crack on my windshield and it's illegal in nyc to have a cracked windshield even though it's not blocking your vision when driving. so i need to get it replaced before i get a ticket for it. so how much should i be paying to get the windshields replaced?

Windshield replacement varies from as close to just different parts of town. I would suggest you ask a lot of questions and pick someone you feel comfortable with. It is worth going with an OEM quality piece of glass, PPG, Pilkington being two of the big ones, also look for Sika or Dow adhesives, there are a lot of really bad fitting aftermarket windshields and adhesives used that aren't even designed to retain windshields. Typically the stock moulding doesn't need to be replaced if it's in good shape and the windshield hasn't been replaced before by someone who really glued it in. It might be good to budget in a new moulding just in case. Around here the windshield is about $160 and $40 for an OEM style moulding, though a universal rain channel moulding can be used to save a bit of money. When I did my windshield though, I was able to reuse mine with no issues.

It's cost around $200.00.
(Your car insurance may cover it.)

Many car insurance specifically exclude windshield damage caused by nature (e.g. hail, ice from trees) unless you pay extra. Check your policy.

Is the crack small enough that a polymer crack filler could be used? That might be closer to $40-60 to have done, depending on size and who does it.

I'm sure it can vary in different states, but for the most part, insurances will cover it under the comprehensive insurance policy, unless you have a specific glass coverage add-on that provides a lower deductible for glass repairs. Some states do require insurances to cover glass with a $0 deductible, so that is something else to look in to.

No more than $300. Don't make the mistake of going to a ghetto shop that is going to do a ghetto job. Pay the extra $75 bucks at a mainstream shop.

Ask them how much it'd be if paying cash. Some places would rather not do insurance paperwork and take less for cash.
