Mine are stuck on with double sided tape. Used a strong, thin string to part the mouldings from the door.

Yeah, those mouldings are held on by double sided tape like maniac said. If you can't get the string to cut through the glue, use a hair dryer or heatgun to soften the glue. Then use something like goo-gone to remove the remaining glue.

there mounted like that from the factory. so if toyota did it i doubt you will have any problems with them falling off. just make sure to get all the old tape/glue off and clean it really well. this will ensure no problems.

I took mine off, but not to paint them, I took them off because i wanted them off. I think the car looks much cleaner without them. You should consider that option =)

For a quick paint job, I would just mask around them - not too terribly difficult to do and lot less labor that trying to pull them off the car and possibly break one. I know on mine, there is a very slight gap between the trim and the door skin, assuming this is the case for most of the 8th gen cars out there. Should be able to mask that off pretty well - just protect the car from excessive overspray, if you're going to use a rattlecan.
